  • Corfu man killed in Wyoming County crash

    TOWN OF MIDDLEBURY, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Corfu man died as the result of a vehicle crash in Wyoming County Thursday.
    New York State Police say Dean Dale, 54, was driving east on W. Middlebury Rd., in the Town of Middlebury, when he failed to yield to a tractor trailer on E. Bethany Rd.
    Dale struck the northbound vehicle, and following the crash, officials tried to performed live-saving measures on him, but he did not survive.
    The crash happened around 8:30 a.m.

  • Seal with amputated flipper headed to Niagara Falls aquarium

    BRIGANTINE, N.J. (AP) — A harbor seal whose rear flipper had to be amputated after being struck by a boat has recovered and is headed to an upstate New York aquarium.
    New Jersey’s Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine has been caring for the seal since it was found wounded on a beach in Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island earlier this year.

  • Lackawanna firefighters receive state’s highest civilian honor after April rescue

    LACKAWANNA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Nearly a dozen of Lackawanna’s bravest were honored for rescuing a family from a burning home.
    Authorities say someone started that blaze back in April. An $11,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
    The Soliman family, on the mend, stood by local leaders on Wednesday to honor the Lackawanna Fire Department.
    City leaders spoke about how lucky this family is to be alive.

  • Debt for NY students averages at more than $30,000

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The amount of debt college students are racking up varies widely from state to state.
    According to new data, the average debt, as of graduation time in 2016 was nearly $20,000 in Utah, but more than $36,000 in New Hampshire.
    For New York, we’re right in the middle, with an average of more than $30,000.
    The data is based on financial aid policies, tuition and the cost of living.
  • Hundreds of animals removed from Lockport home

    LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) — Charges are pending after the Niagara County SPCA seized hundreds of animals from a Lockport home.
    In all, the SPCA took two tortoises, a guinea pig, 31 snakes, 30 quail, 10 cats, 13 rabbits, five ferrets, two sun conures, a hedgehog and 250 feeder mice and rats.
    One of the snakes had to be euthanized. A dead Argentine tegu was also found.
    The SPCA went to the home on Tuesday after receiving a call from code enforcement officials.

  • Police: Bad drug deal ends up with arrests of both buyer and seller

    TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — After a man complained that a drug dealer “ripped him off,” he and the man accused of selling the drugs were both arrested.
    According to Tonawanda police, Michael Schlifke, 26, of Tonawanda, sold what were believed to be Suboxone strips to Niagara Falls resident Kristopher Fedeson, 41.
    Fedeson noticed that the strips were altered and empty, police say, leading to Fedeson confronting Schlifke about the transaction.

    GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Greene County Sheriff’s Department in Tennessee calmed residents after a homeowner began decorating for Halloween.
    The sheriff’s department posted on Facebook asking residents to not call 9-1-1 to report a crime scene at a home.
    Some residents mistook Halloween decorations in a home’s driveway as an actual human. The display shows what looks to be a human crushed by a garage door.

    FREWSBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Frewsburg man is facing charges for abusing animals.
    New York State Troopers say Thomas Wallace, 26, locked dogs in a trailer without food, water, light or even fresh air.
    Police credit a tip from the public for leading them to the scene.
