• Orchard Park police warn of scam letters

    ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Orchard Park Police Department is warning residents of a new scam going around.
    Police say someone is sending out letters to residents, telling them about supposed code violations involving pools. The letters also say that residents should call the sender for an inspection.
    The sender is pretending to be from a building inspector’s office.
    Anyone who thinks they received a scam letter can call police at (716) 662-6444.

    AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Amherst police are looking for help identifying two women.
    Police are calling them persons of interest after a stolen credit card was charged more than 35 times.
    They were only identified as black females.

  • Sunday to be Record Theatre’s final day of operation

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Record Theatre’s final day of operation will be this Sunday, August 27.
    The Main St. store has been in business for nearly 42 years, and was called the “World’s Largest Record Store” when it opened in 1976.
    It had more than 25,000 square feet of retail space.
    This past March, Record Theatre’s owner, Leonard Silver, died at the age of 90. When he died, there were two Record Theatre stores open.

    JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Jamestown man who killed his wife and stepson was sentenced for Manslaughter on Tuesday.
    Deputies with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Civil Division entered the home of Allen Witruke, 53, on the morning of December 8, 2015.
    While there to execute an eviction, the bodies of Catherine Witruke and Eric Washburn were seen. They had been stabbed to death. Eric had also been beaten.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Authorities are looking for a person they say broke into a store and stole cash.
    On Friday, the suspect broke a glass door at 420 Niagara St. and entered before stealing the money, authorities say.
    Up to $1,000 is being offered by Crime Stoppers for information on the suspect.

  • Buffalo students show improvement in ELA, math scores

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — ELA and math scores improved from last year in the Buffalo City School District.
    In 2016, 16.4 percent of third-to-eighth graders showed proficiency in ELA. This year, 17.8 percent of students in the same category were deemed proficient.
    In terms of math, 17.2 percent of students showed proficiency, compared to last year’s number of 16.1 percent.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — An AMC movie theater is coming to Main St. in Buffalo.
    Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown announced on Twitter Tuesday morning that a lease agreement was signed.

    GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — Grand Island’s Town Supervisor wanted them, and now they’re coming — cashless tolls.
    Gov. Andrew Cuomo was in western New York on Tuesday to announce the new tolls.

    STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — An Ohio sheriff says a judge fired back at a man who shot him outside a courthouse, killing him.
    One suspect has been killed and another is in custody, CBS Pittsburgh reports.

  • More than 1,000 take in eclipse at Buffalo State

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The moon may have only shield 72 percent of the sun during the eclipse Monday, but it was 100 percent satisfaction for the more than 1,000 people who showed up NASA’s official viewing site at SUNY Buffalo State.
    Many of the eager viewers started showing up around 9 a.m., and university and NASA groups handing out eclipse viewing glasses ran out quickly.As the afternoon progressed, more and more necks craned toward the sun, as the moon made its intercept.
