  • Girl, 8, struck by car in Niagara Falls

    NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) – An eight-year-old girl was struck by a minivan in Niagara Falls Thursday afternoon.
    The accident occurred around 12:55 p.m. Thursday in the 1800 block of Pierce Avenue.
    According to the Niagara Falls Police Department, the girl was crossing Pierce Avenue mid-block when she was struck by a 2007 westbound Chrysler minivan driven by a 36-year-old Niagara Falls woman.

  • Teacher shoots himself in classroom at Georgia high school

    LITHIA SPRINGS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a teacher took a handgun into a high school near Atlanta and shot himself.
    Douglas County sheriff’s Sgt. Jesse Hambrick says no students were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
    Hambrick tells The Associated Press that the teacher took the weapon into Lithia Springs High School about 7:15 a.m. Thursday and then suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a classroom.

    LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) – A suspect has been charged in a fatal accident on I-90 that occurred in June.
    Krisrofre M. Gregorek, 27, of Ballston Spa, has been charged with second degree manslaughter by New York State Police.
    On June 8, a box truck operated by Gregorek was traveling westbound on the highway and struck the rear of a 2009 Honda, also traveling westbound. The operator of the Honda, Ellen M. Volpe, 45, of Rochester, was pronounced dead at the scene.

  • Former UB basketball player pleads guilty, issued conditional discharge

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A former UB basketball player accused of attempting to strangle a woman has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of criminal contempt Thursday in City of Tonawanda Court.
    Quate J. McKinzie, 20, was issued a five-year conditional discharge which will require him to stay away from the victim in the July 17 incident.
    After McKinzie’s arrest, UB said that the player was “suspended indefinitely” from the team.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A former Catholic School science teacher has pleaded guilty to sending sexually explicit texts to a 12-year-old.
    Scott Schaefer, 44, of Getzville, pleaded guilty to second degree disseminating indecent material to minors in State Supreme Court Thursday.
    Schaefer was formerly employed as a science teacher at St. Gregory the Great School in Williamsville .He admitted to sending sexually explicit texts to the 12-year-old between June 9 and 11 this year.

  • Cheektowaga woman who pleaded guilty to tax fraud sentenced to eight months in prison

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Cheektowaga woman who pleaded guilty to fourth degree criminal tax fraud has been sentenced to eight months in prison and ordered to repay $19,011 in restitution for her involvement in a tax scam.
    Shonnel Harris, 48, of Cheektowaga, pleaded guilty to the charges in March. Harris admitted that she acted as an unlicensed tax preparer, assisting others in the preparation of false NYS personal income tax returns, resulting in a loss of about $19,000 to New York State.

    HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) – An underage drinking sting operation at the Erie County Fair on Tuesday resulted in two undercover underage purchases of alcohol.

    JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) – Seven people were charged with various crimes following a search warrant execution Tuesday night at a Forest Avenue address.
    The Jamestown Police SWAT TEAM, Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force, and New York State Police worked together to serve the warrant.
    The address, 248 Forest Ave., had been identified as a nuisance through citizen complaints, police patrol activities, and JMDTF investigation.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- There’s a big reward for information that could help solve a January homicide. Buffalo Police and Crimestoppers have announced a $7,500 reward for information leading to an arrest in a shooting on Cornwall Ave.
    The shooting happened on Jan. 9 around 4pm. Police say Paul Byrd was sitting in the driver’s seat of a car when someone shot him multiple times. He died later that afternoon.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Canadian man has admitted to being part of an international conspiracy that trafficked an estimated $120 million worth of cocaine into the Canada from the U.S., most of it through the Western District of New York.
