    DERBY, N.Y. (WIVB) — Workers at the Sturgeon Point treatment plant on Sunday afternoon noticed water bubbling at the surface in the area of one of two massive lines that transport treated water from the plant to customers. It was the first sign that something below was very wrong.

    (CNN) – The aviation industry could save $35 billion a year by moving to pilotless planes, according to a new report from UBS. Just one problem: The same report warns that only 17% of travelers are willing to fly without a pilot.
     UBS said that the technology required to operate remote-controlled planes could appear by 2025. Further advances beyond 2030 might result in automated business jets and helicopters, and finally commercial aircraft without pilots.

  • Registration for YMCA Turkey Trot starts Tuesday

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Registration for the annual YMCA Turkey Trot opens 11 a.m. Tuesday.
    The long-running race started in 1896 and helps to support YMCA programs and services for kids and families in WNY who would not otherwise be able to afford the full costs.
    The event is an 8K footrace which begins on Delaware Avenue and continues into downtown Buffalo.

  • Two Buffalo men plead guilty in gunpoint robbery in Denny’s restroom

    BUFFALO,. N.Y. (WIVB) – Two Buffalo men have pleaded guilty to robbing two men at gunpoint at the Denny’s Restaurant on Mani Street in Amherst in Oct. 2016.
    Edward Burton, 26, and Deshawn Foots, 25, both of Buffalo, pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree robbery in Erie County Court.
    Burton and Foots held up the two victims at gunpoint inside the bathroom of the restaurant at 4445 Main St., stealing money and jewelry.

  • Dunkirk police officer dies following illness

    DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Dunkirk police announced that one of their own has passed away.
    Officer Matthew Hazelton died “after a lengthy illness,” they said.
    “Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hazelton’s family and friends,” police wrote on Facebook.
    Arrangements have not been announced, but police say they will be at a later time.

    CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) – In the wake of four tornadoes touching down in Western New York this summer, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer spent part of Monday morning in this area making his case for why federal lawmakers should block plans to slash funding for the country’s weather satellite program.

    Anquan Boldin will start his fifteenth season in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.

    GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — City of Tonawanda police are looking for a group of people who they say used counterfeit money in a number of stores.
    The fake $50 bills were used in convenience stores last week.

  • Slow Roll to go through lower east side

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — On August 7, Buffalo Slow Roll riders will be in the city’s lower east side.
    Bicyclists can meet at the Olivencia Community Center at 5:30 p.m. for a ride through the Larkinville, Emslie and Johnson neighborhoods, as well as Willert Park.
    Major streets bicyclists will ride on are Swan, Clinton, Genesee, Broadway, Sycamore and Seneca.

  • Amherst police looking for man accused of stealing sneakers

    AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police in Amherst are looking for someone who they say stole sneakers from a local store.
    Authorities did not specify which stores the shoes were stolen from, but said the store is on Niagara Falls Blvd.
    The suspect, pictured above, was only identified as a black male.

    MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A teenager who went for a swim at a Melbourne beach and emerged with his feet covered in blood has stumped marine experts.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — More than 100 local kayakers went to the Outer Harbor to try to make history.

    In fact, consumers in the U.S. paid a total of $15 billion dollars in fees for bouncing checks or over drafting last year.
    That’s according to new data released by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
    The Bureau’s director says these types of fees are particularly troublesome for cash-strapped Americans.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- Buffalo Police have located a 17-year-old boy who was reported missing Sunday evening.
    Police say Andrew Sumner, who has special needs, was missing from the Cazenovia Park area.

  • Watkins ‘fine’ after briefly leaving practice

    PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WIVB) – Sammy Watkins left practice on Sunday at St. John Fisher College after rolling his ankle during individual drills, but later returned and said he did not aggravate a prior foot injury that required surgery during the offseason.
    “Just I mean bad, poor footing,” Watkins said of the play that led to his brief exit from practice. “I over-extended on my route and usually I don’t do that, but that play I did. I’m fine.”
