    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Buffalo woman has been charged with animal cruelty after postponing treatment for her Chihuahua, who was hit by a car earlier this week.
    The SPCA of Erie County received a report Wednesday that the dog, belonging to Joann Ponzo of Warren Avenue in Buffalo, had been hit by a car and was receiving no veterinary treatment for his injuries. The dog suffered abrasions and was reportedly unable to use his back legs.

    WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A great horned owl is recovering at the Erie County SPCA after it got stuck in a soccer net for an entire day.
    The Wildlife Department director Days the owl flew into a soccer net in Java Center and was stuck there for a whole day.
    The great horned owl was eventually found and rescued by a member of the Buffalo Audubon Society and brought to SPCA serving Erie County in West Seneca.
    The owl got x-rays done and everything looks good, no breaks in any long bones.

  • East Aurora man sentenced to 20 years for sexually abusing 6-year-old

    EAST AURORA, N.Y. (WIVB) — An East Aurora man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing a child.
    Charles Ernst, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of First-Degree Criminal Sex Act.
    Prosecutors say he admitted to perpetrating oral sexual conduct upon a six-year-old child.
    After his release from prison, Ernst will have to register as a sex offender.

    NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — The new harbor seal pup born at the Aquarium of Niagara is a girl!
    The aquarium made the announcement on Thursday morning.
    On July 13, the pup was born to eight-year-old Zoey, who has been at the aquarium since 2012.

  • Computer crash delays delivery of The Buffalo News

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — If you didn’t get your newspaper this morning, it was due to a computer crash.
    An automatic antivirus update crashed the computers that produce printing plates at The Buffalo News.
    Until the early morning hours, the plate-making computers were being rebuilt so that the newspaper could be printed again.
    The same problem was had by at least one other newspaper.
  • Efforts to reduce Lake Ontario water levels appear to be working

    ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) — Efforts to reduce the water levels of Lake Ontario appear to be working.
    The International Joint Commission (IJC), which regulates lake levels, says water is now just below 248 feet. The IJC was hoping to reach that goal by Aug. 1, which it did.
    The outflow of the lake to the St. Lawrence River is at its max right now.
    The IJC will reduce that as lake levels go down.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Community members are speaking out on whether Buffalo police officers should wear body cameras.
    On Wednesday night, a discussion was held about the issue.
    The group We Are Women Warriors led a conversation at the Merriweather Library in Buffalo.
