• Alaska Legislature expected to address alcohol law revision

  JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – A Soldotna state senator is expected to again push for reforms in Alaska’s alcohol laws when the legislature convenes.
  The Juneau Empire reports Republican Peter Micciche in 2014 introduced legislation to make changes. The issue is expected to come up again in 2017.
  The Alaska Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and interested parties since 2012 have worked to redraft statutes that regulate alcoholic beverages.

• Group buys land west of Fairbanks for growing greenbelt

  FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – A national conservation group has purchased land that will add to a growing greenbelt west of Fairbanks.
  The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports The Conservation Fund, based in Arlington, Virginia, bought two parcels that will add more than 300 acres to a mix of natural lands already protected against development.
  The property is in the Goldstream Valley near the start of the road leading to Murphy Dome.

• Ketchikan man arrested in Colorado for attempted Christmas Eve murder

  A Ketchikan man was arrested in Colorado for attempting to kill his wife while visiting the area over the holiday weekend, according to a release from the Boulder Country Sheriff’s Office. 
  In a Dec. 25 release, the sheriff’s office wrote that Rodney David Burba Jr., 34, was a passenger in a vehicle, which his wife was driving, near the town of Lyons, on Christmas Eve.

  NEW YORK (AP) – A poll finds that Americans are hopeful that things are going to get better for the country in 2017 after a year filled with wrenching politics, foreign conflicts and mass shootings.
  The annual New Year’s poll by The Associated Press and the Times Square Alliance found that 55 percent of Americans polled believe 2017 will be better for them personally.

  It’s awful out in Juneau on a Saturday night. After a bunch of snow, it’s raining, and moat-like ponds of water fill the streets, the sidewalks, everywhere.
  Bad conditions however, have not affected attendance at a Club Baby Seal show, a new comedy troupe in Juneau.

  The two men accused of killing 41-year-old James Moren in the early morning hours of Dec. 24 were arraigned on Christmas Day.

  Police are investigating a double homicide at an Anchorage apartment.
  KTUU-TV reports that police responded Saturday and found one person dead and another injured. Both victims suffered gunshot wounds. The injured victim later died after being taken to a hospital.

  Every November, just before Thanksgiving, Ketchikan High School’s Rotary Interact club – the high school version of Rotary – organizes a pie auction. Money from the auction goes to the Ketchikan Pioneers Home, and usually the students are able to raise a couple thousand dollars.
