• Two plead guilty to violations during Haines moose hunt

  Two Alaska residents recently pleaded guilty to hunting violations during this year’s Haines moose hunt.
  Truman Philbrick of Wasilla pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of taking a bull moose without the required permit. Two other charges against him were dismissed as part of a plea deal. Philbrick was fined $3,000 with half of the amount suspended and he was ordered to pay an additional $1,000 in restitution.

• Retired judge steps into Haines magistrate role for 6 months

  For the past three months, a magistrate judge based in Yakutat has covered Haines arraignments and other court proceedings. But this week, that changes.

• Petersburg fire fighters respond to blaze Tuesday morning

  Black smoke billowed from a wooded area near Wrangell Avenue about about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Petersburg.
  Petersburg Fire Department responded to a fire where a two-story building, located back in the woods behind a home at 1312 N. Nordic Drive, was in flames.

  ANCHORAGE — Police in Alaska have found a pickup whose windows were shot when the owner tried to stop a thief.
  Anchorage police said officers found the truck abandoned near east 20th Avenue.

  Alaska’s minimum wage will rise by a nickel, to $9.80 an hour, beginning Jan. 1.
