  The widow of a slain Georgia police officer hopes to learn more about why his body armor didn’t save him.
  Tammy Jordan says in an ongoing federal lawsuit that a vest from Michigan-based Armor Express failed to stop gunfire that killed Griffin Police Officer Kevin Jordan. He was shot five times while intervening in a fight while working an off-duty security job at a Waffle House in Griffin, Georgia, in 2014, according to the lawsuit.

  A state election official says Alaska will not change its voter registration deadline amid concerns raised by two U.S. senators about Alaska’s deadline and that of several other states falling on a holiday weekend.
  Carol Thompson, with Alaska’s Division of Elections, said by email that division offices will be open the weekend of Oct. 8 and 9 to help voters. She says Alaska also has an online voter registration system.

  A northern Alaska lawmaker says he’s not giving up his fight against the state over his loss in the August primary election.
  The Juneau Empire reports Democratic Rep. Benjamin Nageak of Barrow had indicated in testimony Wednesday that he would be pulling out of his lawsuit. But during testimony Thursday he said he was unable to hear the questions and answered incorrectly when he addressed the court via phone from Massachusetts.

  Forecasters expect Hurricane Matthew to pass between Jamaica and Hispaniola before hitting parts of Cuba and the Bahamas.

  A brown bear mauling prompted the Coast Guard to rescue two hunters from a mountain near Hoonah and bring them to Juneau Saturday afternoon. Only one of the hunters was injured.
