• US marshals arrest man indicted in Anchorage homicide

  A second suspect indicted on murder charges in the death of an Anchorage man on a rural road is in custody.
  U.S. marshals on Friday arrested 19-year-old Riek William Gat in West Virginia.
  He was sought in the death of 22-year-old Michael Mitchell.
  Mitchell’s body was found just before 8:30 a.m. Aug. 22 at Mile 3 Campbell Airstrip Road in Anchorage. He had been shot multiple times in the head and torso.
  Gat is charged with first- and second-degree murder.

• Senators file lawsuit over Walker’s permanent fund veto

  An Alaska state senator and two former state senators sued the state Friday, claiming Gov. Bill Walker illegally vetoed Alaska Permanent Fund earnings that were required to be transferred to dividends.
  Walker in June cut in half anticipated permanent fund dividends that give all residents a share of the state’s oil wealth.
  He said checks had to be reduced to save the program and he vetoed $666.3 million.
  He kept enough money in place to award everyone a $1,000 payout.

• Alaska ferry repairs to interrupt service to Bellingham

  Repairs will take an Alaska ferry off the water and interrupt service to Bellingham, Washington, for two weeks.
  The Ketchikan Daily News reports the Columbia’s travel speeds are reduced and routes will be delayed through its scheduled arrival in Bellingham Sept. 25.

• State fast-tracks construction for new Tustumena ferry

  The state’s plan to build a new ferry for Southwest Alaska has been fast-tracked.
  Originally, construction was scheduled to start in 2019, but now contractors could begin building the new ship as early as next year.

• 17-year-old killed in accidental shooting

  A 17-year-old boy was killed in an accidental shooting outside a home in the Mountain Wood Circle neighborhood Saturday morning.
  The boy was one of four males preparing for a duck hunt according to a Juneau Police Department press release.
  He was reportedly standing outside of a truck when he tried to pull his shotgun out of the back seat by its barrel. The shotgun went off and the boy was hit in his torso.
