Helicopter carrying Iran’s hard-line president apparently crashes in foggy, mountainous region
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister and other officials apparently crashed in the mountainous northwest reaches of Iran on Sunday, sparking a massive rescue operation in a fog-shrouded forest as the public was urged to pray.
The likely crash came as Iran under Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel last month and has enriched uranium cl

Is exploding cost of raising kids going to shrink Southern California?
Want to have a kid or three?
Want is a key word here. Contrary to some pop culture chatter about the supposedly expanding number of young adults who don’t want kids, at least some new polling suggests the opposite might be true. Not only do most people who can have kids want them, the desire for bigger families – three or more kids – is more common than at any time in the past half-century.
In a Gallup poll released last fall about 45% of respondents said the ideal family inclu

    After Trump’s conviction, now what?
Former President Donald Trump was convicted on Thursday on 34 felony counts pertaining to hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. The former president is the first to be convicted of a crime.
This editorial board was not impressed by the indictment when it was first released last year, describing the case as “remarkably thin.”
Obviously, a jury of 12 New Yorkers disagreed and decided the former president was in fact guilty of viol

Successful Aging: Age is just a number … for many, but not all
    Q. People often remark that age is just a number. We assume anyone who exercises, has a healthy diet and stays actively engaged in professional and other pursuits will live forever. I have done all of these and put in thousands of miles of running (with scars to prove it) and believe and certainly feel age is more than just a number. Am I missing something? B.J.
From my perspective, that phrase is in response to ageism, a cultural norm in our society. It suggests that what we are doing, thinking

Ranks of high-priced public pensioners explode in California
    Fort Worth Star-Telegram 2003
Yes, public employees, we know you detest $100K club stories. We hear you when you say it’s a distorted lens on public pension challenges. And that there’s nothing magical — or diabolical —about the number $100,000.
We’re even sympathetic to accusations that we suffer from “pension envy” (guilty as charged).
But we argue that the growth of the $100K club in the gargantuan California Public Employees Retirement System —

Senior Moments: When the Flower Moon seems to speak directly to you
As if I didn’t already have enough reasons to love May, what with its many celebrations, both real and imagined on my part, it is also the month of the Flower Moon.
Therefore on May 23, I was especially looking forward to a visit from the festooned moon, named after the abundant flowers that bloom in May. Although some might argue that he wasn’t sporting a flower crown, I can only tell you that I saw a big round full moon covered with spring flowers.

Why a ‘reimagined’ detention system for juveniles has stalled in LA County
Four years ago, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors backed a sweeping reform package that proposed closing the county’s juvenile halls by 2025 and placing the youth into smaller, more homelike “safe and secure healing centers.”
The progressive policy pledged to invest in a new Department of Youth Development — an agency eventually formed in 2022 — that would focus on programs to keep children and teens out of the juvenile justice system, while simultaneously

Yes, elder abuse can land you in prison and cost thousands in fines
As the youngest of the baby boomers turn 60 this year, issues affecting the elderly are sure to become more prominent.
One of the most pressing concerns for seniors is elder abuse. As many as 5 million older Americans experience abuse every year, according to the National Council on Aging.
Under California law, elder abuse is defined broadly and can result in civil or criminal penalties. If the abuse rises to the level of criminal abuse, the charges can be misdemeanors or felonies.

Reid Detmers’ nightmare continues in Angels loss to Mariners
SEATTLE — At various times throughout his still relatively short big league career, Reid Detmers has looked like one of the Angels best starters and one of their worst.
He’s currently the latter, mired in a mystifying two-month slump.
Detmers gave up five runs in the Angels’ 9-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, bloating his ERA to 6.14.

After Detmers gave up five runs in a 9-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday, the Angels optioned the left-hander with a 6.14 ERA to Triple-A Salt Lake.
