Appreciation: John Singleton was a giant of African-American, and L.A., cinema
This July 13, 1991 file photo shows filmmaker John Singleton, who made the movie “Boyz N The Hood,” in Los Angeles. The family for Singleton says the filmmaker will be taken off life support Monday, April 29, 2019, after suffering a stroke almost two weeks ago. In a statement Monday, Singleton’s family said it was “an agonizing decision, one that our family made over a number of days with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.” (AP Photo/Bob Galbraith, File)

Retreat to Red Mountain Resort for health, wellness and adventure
Standing before the sweep of Padre Canyon, Utah, under clear blue skies and a cathedral of impossibly red rock, I peer over a sheer cliff and into a narrow slot canyon, so deep that its floor is dark.
I hear the metal click of the carabiner securing my harness to the main rappel line and another sound, which comes as a shock: my own breath, deep but struggling to stay even. Red Mountain Resort’s hired expert guide, Todd Perkins, gives me an encouraging nod, while another first-time canyone

Fryer on baseball: Beckman vs. Capistrano Valley might be best of first-round playoff matchups
Kevin Lavalle did not see it coming.
    That’s because he never looked.
Lavalle, Beckman’s baseball coach, this year did not try to predict his Patriots’ first-round opponent for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.
“I’d never get it right,” said Lavalle of previous predictions, so he quit trying.
Playoff brackets for the seven CIF-SS divisions were released Monday morning as Lavalle went about his everyday business at Beckman, a public school in Irvine that is par

Whicker: El Camino College baseball team plays and pitches through the pain
TORRANCE — The El Camino College baseball team was supposed to meet at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19. A game against Taft would follow.
Nate Fernley, the coach, sent out a text that moved the meeting to 9:30. Only a few knew why.
Ty Conrad was uneasy because Sladen Mohl was his roommate, a guy who always was where he was supposed to be, when he was supposed to be there. But Mohl never came home the previous night.
Ian Brady knew because his dad, a police officer, had told him.
