Rose Parade 2019: Amazing but true stories behind the New Year’s Day event
Horses, floats and marching bands! That’s the Tournament of Roses Parade; however, it is the history of the iconic New Year’s Day celebration and its memorable moments — even occasional mishaps — that have secured its place in the annals of beloved American institutions.

Fix new rules that can sabotage gig economy
SACRAMENTO – An anti-technology movement from early 19th-century Britain has long been part of our lexicon. Luddites were knitters who destroyed textile machines to protect their jobs. Today the term applies to anyone who fights a crusade against the modern economy. Original Luddites weren’t against technology per se, Smithsonian magazine explains, but only attacked manufacturers “who used machines in what they called ‘a fraudulent and deceitful manner’ to get aroun

    Capitalists vs. Capitalism
It’s bad enough when leftists smear capitalism. I hate it more when capitalists do it, too.
I’d hoped for more from the world’s current richest man, Jeff Bezos.
I love the service he created. Amazon lets me buy Christmas gifts right from my couch. Its prices are so low that the Fed chairman says Amazon probably lowered America’s inflation rate.
Entrepreneur Jeff Bezos is a hero. He created lots of jobs and better service, and he and his investors pay billions in taxes.

New study confirms business flight from California accelerating
The evidence is more than anecdotal. According to a recent study, business flight out of California has accelerated to an unprecedented level. In 2016, the year for which the most recent data is available, 1,800 businesses moved out or “disinvested” from California. This is the highest one-year total in the nine-year history of tracking by the study’s author.

Chargers squander solid defensive showing in ugly loss to Ravens
CARSON – In a high-stakes game of keep-away, here was their last, desperate line of defense.
The Chargers defense stood at the 2-yard-line, understandably gassed. Midway through the second quarter, nothing seemed to be working. Their offense had no rhythm whatsoever; in three drives, the Chargers mustered a meager seven plays and 14 yards. The Ravens, meanwhile, had just driven the field in a dozen plays, and now, left with a fourth down, they were going for the jugular.

Rams try to get on track with wins and Aaron Donald sacks, which go hand in hand
The Rams are fond of saying that turnover margin is the best statistical predictor of wins and losses, but the sack numbers of star defensive lineman Aaron Donald are glaring.

They’re 5-7 when he doesn’t, and that’s relevant because Donald has been strikingly quiet on the field in the past two weeks, when the Rams suffered losses to Chicago and Philadelphia.
