Californians comprise 46 of the 234 Democratic representatives, the largest state contingent by far. Among all California Democrats, however, none carries political significance equal to the Orange Four. That the Democrats won every congressional seat in Orange County gave a tremendous boost to their national reputation.

    ACLU suit says authorities make it hard for migrant detainees to call attorneys
    One immigrant has been detained for over three years, first at a facility in Adelanto and now at another in Orange County, with little access to a phone to call an attorney and human rights activists.
    Another earns $1 a day, not enough to pay for such calls. A third can’t connect with an attorney because each time he calls one he gets a recorded greeting, and the detention center’s phone system requires that a live person answer and accept the call or it disconnects.

    UC Irvine leads in nationwide effort to get more lower-income students into top colleges
    UC Irvine enrolled nearly 900 more Pell grant recipients between the 2015-16 to 2017-18 academic years, leading the nation’s top colleges, according to a report released Monday, Dec. 17.
    The university estimates that 37 percent of its undergraduates receive Pell grants, which are federal scholarships for students from low-income households. That too is among the highest in the nation, the university said in a press release.
