• Heisler: As NBA offenses change, so do 2018 draft projections

    Scouting the March Madness …
For the next three weeks the action in basketball won’t be in the NBA, largely devoted to seeding battles, but the college game as the next group of prospects make their debut on the big stage.
The scouting mission has gotten dicier with NBA teams playing ever faster and smaller. Rookie of the Year lock Donovan Mitchell went No. 13 to Utah, barely making the lottery. Lakers surprise Kyle Kuzma went No. 27, barely making the first round.

ANAHEIM – With a goal and a fight already part of his night, Nick Ritchie only needed an assist to have the so-called Gordie Howe hat trick against the team that “Mr. Hockey” made his legendary nickname for.
So did Corey Perry and Ryan Kesler. The assist never came for any of the three Ducks to complete the trick but there was no disappointment over it. Although, it’s not as if they didn’t want that.
“I’m sure everyone did,” Ritchie said Friday aft

  • Gardening: Spring brings new blooms along with fresh excitement

The sages taught that whenever you see a beautiful tree (or animal, or human being), you should bless God for having created it.
This instruction was recorded nearly 2,000 years ago in the Babylonian Talmud (Berachot, 52b), a text that was compiled in Sura, a city that exists today in southern Iraq.
Such a blessing seems fitting — many times over — as winter turns to spring and long-dormant trees of every description, both deciduous and evergreen, begin to bloom.

A cup or so spread around citrus, avocado and other fruit trees boosts their performance, too. This little bit once a year is just right, but more is counterproductive, so don’t get carri

In a normal universe, the rejection of a gas tax increase by a state agency would be based primarily on policy grounds. But in a strange mix of wonkish tax policy, political turf fighting and revenge, California drivers will be spared — temporarily — from a 4 cent per gallon tax increase on gasoline.
On Feb. 27, the Board of Equalization was expected to approve a routine request by the governor’s Department of Finance to raise the tax. But it did not. As a result, the state tre
