  The Shirley Neighbourhood Care Scheme, which has 60 volunteers who give around 50,000 hours of their time a year between them, has been recognised for its achievements. The scheme, based at Shirley Methodist Church, on Eldon Avenue, was awarded £2,000 at the Heart of the Community awards on Tuesday, after it came second. Its 60 volunteers mainly provide transport for its elderly and disabled clients to go to hospital but they also run a lunch club, a shopping bus service and a befriending.

  A volunteer who has been helping homeless people in Croydon for more than ten years and now spearheads a 1,000-member charity has been recognised for his achievements. Croydon Churches Floating Shelter has been running since 2004 and chairman of the charity John Broom is at the heart of what it offers.
