  Slippery platforms were closed at East Croydon as staff struggled to remove ice from the new surfaces. As temperatures plummeted to below freezing at the station at about 8pm on Monday evening, Southern Rail decided to close platforms one and two as ice formed. The rail company explained the new surfaces which had been recently laid at the station were making the ice "more difficult to treat", so stopped passengers coming onto the platforms for safety reasons.
