  • Gilmore murder accused refused bail at High Court

    One of the men charged with murdering prominent loyalist George Gilmore has failed in a new bid to secure High Court bail. Lawyers for Brian McLean, 35, argued that he should be released because of the alleged unreliability of key prosecution witnesses to the killing in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim.

The Royal Horticultural Society judges will visit on August 12 as Cullybackey bids to win the large village category and therefore be recognised as one of the cleanest, greenest and most beautiful places in the UK.

    Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire is the target of East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson's ire on the front page of the News Letter as he calls on him to "stop pussyfooting around" on the extra 1bn of spending negotiated in the DUP's deal with the Conservatives. Mr Wilson claims it would suit Sinn Fein's agenda to prevent increased public spending in Northern Ireland and described the current situation as "all a bit cack-handed".

  • New dementia group to be formed locally

    A charity set up by people with dementia to tackle misconceptions about the condition is taking their message out into the Carrickfergus community. They want to explain what living with dementia is actually like and to challenge negative assumptions in the hope that others will be more accepting and tolerant of the symptoms and helpful towards people living with the condition.

    Northern Regional College is teaming up with the Irish Football Association to offer an exciting new Diploma in Sports Studies. Students on the diploma course will gain the knowledge and skills to secure employment in a wide variety of sports careers in the football industry and can progress onto a Foundation Degree in Sports, Exercise and Fitness at the college, or go on to university.
