Countdown begins: One year until opening of new garden to commemorate life of Queen Elizabeth II
via ianvisits.co.uk
Work on a new garden inside Regent’s Park to commemorate the late Queen Elizabeth II is progressing, and the Royal Parks says it is on target to open next spring.
New garden and tower (c) HTA Design LLP
Now four months into the sixteen-month build, key features are emerging, including newly laid paths, and work is beginning on a circular pond, designed to enhance habitats for local wildlife. More than 200,000 bulbs and 40 trees have been ordered to create colourful nectar-rich planting. Re -

Network Rail painting tracks white to beat the summer heat
via ianvisits.co.uk
Look out for white railway tracks, as Network Rail has started painting some key sections with white paint — to cool them down.
(c) Network Rail
Over the next few weeks, approximately 1,500 litres of white paint – the equivalent of 30,000 square metres — will be applied to the railway tracks. By painting parts of the rail white, they absorb less heat – 5°C to 10°C cooler than one left unpainted.
The issue is that hot rail tracks expand and can buckle in the heat, -
Clever tube trivia in the Elizabeth line’s new station stickers
via ianvisits.co.uk
The new ghostbusting stickers that recently appeared in some Elizabeth line stations have a little noticed feature in their pattern that’s quite clever, once you spot it.
The thing to look for is that Transport for London (TfL) has customised the moquette-inspired patterns for each of the four Elizabeth line stations where they are being used.
Have you spotted it yet?
Look again, and notice how the moquette colours are different at each of the stations.
You might have spotted that some of -
Exhibition tells the story of the slaves who fueled Britain’s postal empire
via ianvisits.co.uk
A small photo of a woman carrying two lumps of coal is unlike any image of a woman carrying two lumps of coal you could imagine. It’s also the image that triggered an exploration of the little-known story of slaves on Britain’s 19th-century postal ships at the Postal Museum.Although the UK had abolished slavery in stages between 1807 and 1838, it didn’t apply to other countries, and didn’t stop British firms trading with countries that used slave labour.
So, yay for Brita -

London’s Pocket Parks: The Red Lion Playhouse, E1
via ianvisits.co.uk
Just around the corner from Whitechapel station, the site of what could be London’s oldest purpose built theatre stage has been opened up as a new pocket park. The Red Lion was an Elizabethan playhouse built in 1567. It was possibly the first purpose-built venue in the city since Roman times. Although it seemed to be commercially successful at first, its location outside London (in modern-day Whitechapel) was a problem, and it lasted barely a year or two before closing.
The venture was soon
