• Netcracker launches generative AI tool for telcos

The Netcracker GenAI Telco Solution promises to provide operators with a tool to do things like ‘enhance customer interactions’ and increase automation and productivity by feeding data into generative AI models.
Netcracker asserts that the telco business is very specialised and most of its data highly confidential and a large proportion of it changes constantly, creating challenges for operators to leverage real-time data. And thus the pitch is that a generative AI tool can help them
  • Growth in 5G FWA kit matches operator hype

The market for fixed wireless CPE is on the up, driven by growth in 5G devices, according to new figures released this week.
The data, shared by the GSA, shows strong growth, albeit from a relatively low base, given the size of the global telecoms industry. But nonetheless, the figures serve to back up some of the recent hype over FWA we have seen from the operator community, particularly on the other side of the Atlantic.
5G FWA customer premises equipment shipments more than doubled to 7.4 mil

  • Spain mulls block on STC’s Telefonica buy

The Spanish government is at sixes and sevens over Saudi Telecom’s proposed acquisition of a 9.9% stake in Telefonica.
There has been vocal opposition to the move since Saudi Telecom, better known as STC, shared its decision to spend €2.1 billion to become the Spanish incumbent’s largest shareholder last week, including from one of the country’s leading government officials. Spain has the power to block the move, but deciding whether to exercise that power will be a tricky

  • Deutsche Telekom claims 12 Gbps mobile speed record on 6 GHz

Deutsche Telekom has realised mobile network data rates of 12 gigabits per second in tests, using 6 GHz frequencies.
It claims that’s a world record, which is highly likely to be the case given that, in its own words, it generated data speed and bandwidth as much as 12 times higher than current 5G networks.
The German incumbent has been banging the 6 GHz drum for a while. Late last year it declared the frequency band to be “ideal” for mobile communications, having carried out s

Chip firm Qualcomm and tech giant Samsung claim to have achieved the ‘world’s first’ simultaneous 5G 2x uplink and 4x downlink carrier aggregation for FDD spectrum.
The trial was done using a ‘mobile phone form-factor test device’ – which is presumably not dissimilar from a phone – running on a Snapdragon X75 5G Modem-RF System and Samsung’s 5G dual-band and tri-band radios, using carrier aggregation technology.
