Due to engineering works on the London Overground this weekend there’s a rare chance to travel over a bit of railway that the trains don’t usually see passengers.
On both Saturday and Sunday 15th-16th July, the usual service between Richmond / Shepherds Bush and Gospel Oak won’t be running. To partially help, they are laying on a special service that will run between Willesden Junction (Low Level) and Stratford calling at Kensal Green, Queens Park, Kilburn High Road, South Hamp

Modern architecture and porcelain at the Sir John Soane’s Museum
via ianvisits.co.uk
Two very different exhibitions are at Sir John Soane’s Museum at the moment, both taking a look at topics that interested the man who lived here.
One is a reinterpretation of Hogarth’s famous allegory sketches of a rich man who falls into ruin, A Rake’s Progress, which is owned by the museum, and are usually on display for a short time most days.
Ceramic artist, Bouke de Vries has created eight vases in progressive states of damage representing Tom Rakewell’s slow downfal -
GSMA, ESA forge stronger ties between satellite and cellular industries
The mobile and satellite sectors have never been in such close alignment, and they are about to get even closer.
The GSMA and the European Space Agency (ESA) on Wednesday announced the signing of a memorandum of intent (MoI) that covers collaboration on new satellite and terrestrial network technologies.
Non-terrestrial networking (NTN) has been incorporated into the 3GPP’s 5G standard since Release 17, and work is already well underway to turn it into a commercial reality. The partnership -
Ericsson ticks a lot of green boxes with Texas 5G site
Ericsson has demonstrated a new solar and battery-powered proof-of-concept 5G site in the US that fits with its own sustainability goals as well as those of its operator customers.
And as well as powering a base station with renewable energy, and using software to help keep costs down, the site also affords operators the ability to create new revenue streams from the electricity they generate.
The new site is located in Plano, Texas. Ericsson describes its as a complete energy-smart network solu -
Vodafone taps Cisco and Qwilt for major CDN rollout
UK-based Vodafone wants to offer a superior streaming experience to customers in Europe and Africa.
To that end, it has partnered with Cisco and Qwilt, which will supply their edge-based content delivery network (CDN) solution. This will enable Voda to cache video content and applications closer to end users, making for faster, more responsive services. This benefits content owners and app developers too, because they gain higher-quality access to millions of fixed and mobile broadband customers -
UK Space Agency pumps £20 million into drone development
A new £20 million pot of cash will be made available by the UK Space Agency for future telecoms tech and aerial connectivity drone projects.
Companies working on such projects (examples are given as drones delivering medical supplies to hospitals, providing dedicated connectivity for emergency services, and connecting remote regions) can bid for the funding, which is part of the European Space Agency (ESA) Advanced Research in Telecommunications Services (ARTES) programme.

Camden housing left empty due to HS2 transformed into art studios
via ianvisits.co.uk
Nearly 100 flats right next to the HS2’s Euston station building site that were vacated due to the construction noise are to be handed over to artists while the Euston station works are on hold.
Construction of HS2’s Euston station has been paused for two years by government instruction while it undertakes a review of the station design and costs. That has however left a lot of empty land and buildings that the council and HS2 are looking to find temporary uses for.
The first is that -
How do we balance the opportunities and threats presented by AI?
Analyst firm Omdia recently hosted an afternoon of presentations and discussion of the current state of play with artificial intelligence.
While AI as a concept has been around for almost 70 years, the latest developments around generative AI in particular have revved up the hype cycle once more. Almost uniquely with this technology, any hype is matched by an equal amount of panic about its potential negative consequences. While some of this may be Hollywood-induced hysteria at this point, there -
Princess Diana’s dress to go on display next to Dot Cotton’s overcoat
via ianvisits.co.uk
A red coat worn by Princess Diana will go on display for the first time in over a decade, and will sit alongside Dot Cotton’s tweed coat. The link between the two is that they were both designed by Jewish Londoners, and the Museum of London Docklands will be hosting an exhibition showing Jewish Londoners designers and their works. From East End tailors to the couture salons of the West End, the exhibition will be telling the story of Jewish designers, makers and retailers responsible for so -

Huawei made an interesting announcement at the Shanghai Mobile World Conference. According to Yang Chaobin (President of ICT Products and Solutions), Huawei is going to launch a complete set of commercial 5.5G network equipment in 2024. 5.5G is basically a 10x upgrade on 5G in terms of speed.

Photos from Waterloo Station’s disused rail link
via ianvisits.co.uk
There was once a railway link between Waterloo Station and its smaller neighbour at Waterloo East, and while long since closed to trains, the link remains in place if you know where to look. In fact, it’s not difficult to find, but many thousands of people see it every day as it’s the old red bridge that sits underneath the modern pedestrian corridor linking the two stations.
And how many people have wandered past wondering why there’s a double-decker bridge here? The bridge cam
