AI reaches an inflection point with call to pause development
An open letter signed by many tech leaders is calling for a pause in training all artificial intelligence systems more powerful than GPT-4, but it’s probably futile.
“AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research and acknowledged by top AI labs,” opens the letter. Among the most prominent signatories are tech industry legends Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, as well as a bunch of AI researchers and com -

Complete Mobile is described as a collaboration between BT Wholesale and a number of its Part -

Cycle hire cargo bikes expand into Westminster
via ianvisits.co.uk
A fleet of electric cargo bikes are being rolled out in Westminster, as a pilot project to see if they encourage local people to switch from motor vehicles for moving modest amounts of parcels. The bikes are being supplied by the bike hire firm, Beryl, who already provide the same bikes in Hackney, and the scheme is being managed by Westminster Council as a pilot trial.

via ianvisits.co.uk
The former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson is one of those larger than life personalities that is a gift to cartoonists, and there’s a display of the cartoonist’s work at the moment. The exhibition, aptly at the Cartoon Museum looks back at the political career from MP through his years to the premiership and how he handled, or didn’t, the various calamities that struck.

Ofcom finds signs of responsible social media use among children
When it comes to social media, the kids might be alright, according to the latest research from UK comms regulator Ofcom.
It sounds counter-intuitive. Here in the UK, many teenage tragedies have been linked to self-harm material online. It is a serious enough issue that one of the main stated aims of the government’s Online Safety Bill is to make social media platforms responsible for removing illegal content. And that’s before you get to all the trolling, bullying, humiliation, and -
Rakuten opens European Open RAN hub in the UK
Japanese tech and media giant Rakuten is hoping its new customer experience centre will persuade European operators to move to Open RAN technology.
Having announced its intentions last November, Rakuten just about got it done on schedule, thanks largely to a significant injection of cash (~$2.3 million) from the Japanese state. The launch event, which we attended yesterday, featured Yuki Naruse, Director for International Policy Coordination at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications -
Monumental display of British maritime art at Queen’s House
via ianvisits.co.uk
Paintings of large British warships at sea are a classic in any art gallery, but the seemingly British tradition owes its origins to a Dutch father and son who emigrated to the UK.Willem van de Velde the Elder was a draughtsman and expert at drawing ships, while his son, unsurprisingly called the Younger, was a painter who often turned his father’s drawings into the sort of paintings we think of as timeless classics today.
The two moved to England following an invitation from King Charles -
UK big broadband disappoints customers
The UK’s biggest broadband providers are providing “mediocre” services, at least in the eyes of their customers, despite the fact that they are asking for much more money for the privilege.
With significant – and much discussed – price rises looming in the UK, you could be forgiven for assuming that service providers would be going out of their way to ensure customer satisfaction. But according to the results of the latest Which? broadband provider study, that is cl -

London’s Pocket Parks: Festival Garden, EC4
via ianvisits.co.uk
A large swathe of lawn and seating next to St Paul’s Cathedral looks like it’s part of the Cathedral grounds, but is actually owned by the City of London. The pocket park is the result, in part of the attention of German bombs which cleared so much of the land of its former buildings, and the arrival of the Festival of Britain. There were a number of Festival Gardens built in London and across the UK to celebrate the event, and this one was provided by the City of London as its contri
