Westminster Abbey to close for the Coronation preparations
Westminster Abbey has confirmed that it will have to close for a few weeks to prepare the Collegiate Church for the forthcoming Coronation of King Charles III.Compared to previous Corronations though, it’s a fairly short closure, signifying the rather more modern, and much smaller scale of the King’s Coronation this time.
The Abbey will close to visitors from Tuesday 25th April and will re-open on Monday 8th May. So the Abbey will be closed for just two weeks in order to prepare for

  • Huawei reportedly shelves plans for Cambridge R&D site

Chinese kit maker Huawei is said to have quietly cancelled a £1 billion project to build a new research facility in the UK.
Having bought 500 acres of land in the Cambridge tech cluster – sometimes referred to as ‘Silicon Fen’ – back in 2018, the plan was to build an R&D campus for new optoelectronics products that could potentially be used in fibre networks. The first phase of the project would have seen Huawei plough £1 billion into the construction of a

  • China is miles ahead in telecoms research

A new report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute rings alarm bells about China’s clear R&D lead in all things telecoms.
The report was released last week and covered by Light Reading. The headline finding is that “Western democracies are losing the global technological competition, including the race for scientific and research breakthroughs, and the ability to retain global talent.” In 37 out of 44 technology areas analysed, China is the R&D leader, often by
  • The race is on for TIM’s network as new bid lands

Italian operator group TIM has received a second offer for its network assets, this time from a consortium of CdP Equity (CDPE) and Macquarie, and that means the race is on.
The telco was already sitting on a non-binding bid from KKR, which tabled an offer of unspecified value for a stake of undefined size in the networks unit a month ago. It seemed then that other offers would emerge and a CDP/Macquarie grouping was the most likely candidate, but nothing came through by 24 February, the date TI

Although referred to as a waiting room, it was for some time known as a billiard hall and used by station staff. Then for reasons that seem unclear, it was board
  • CMA gives provisional nod to Viasat-Inmarsat deal

The UK’s competition watchdog thinks Viasat’s $7.3 billion acquisition of Inmarsat won’t harm competition in the satellite sector after all.
This is the provisional conclusion of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)’s Phase 2 investigation. It was published last week, but the announcement flew under the radar somewhat because the global telecoms industry was at Mobile World Congress (MWC), collectively tying itself in knots about what it is and what it should be do

    The 300th London alley article
It’s hard to believe it, but last week was the 300th in a surprisingly long-running series on the history and description of London’s alleys and passages.

So this week, I’m having a day off, so sorry, no alley, but time to a take a pause, reflect a little and look back at what’s been written and think about the next few hundred alleys.
