T-Mobile US hack affects 37 million customers
Magenta mobile operator T-Mobile has been left pink with embarrassment following a data breach affecting 37 million customers.
The self-styled ‘uncarrier’ late last week revealed a hacker exploited an application programming interface (API) to gain unauthorised access to customer information. Somewhat disconcerting is T-Mobile’s admission that it believes the hack commenced around 25 November, but the telco didn’t learn it was under attack until 5 January.

UK Space Agency dishes out £50 million in funding for comms satellites
£50 million of funding is on the table for ‘ambitious and innovative projects that will supercharge the UK’s satellite communications industry.’
The funding is part of the European Space Agency (ESA) Advanced Research in Telecommunications Services (ARTES) programme, and is available for firms developing new satellite constellations, the ground systems needed to access them, or whole end-to-end systems.
The release suggests potential applications for satellites could incl -
Giant “soap bubbles” filling the base of the Leadenhall skyscraper
via ianvisits.co.uk
Giant bubbles of fun are filling the space at the bottom of the Cheesegrater – aka the Leadenhall Building – in the City at the moment. It’s art, but it’s so much fun as well. The bubbles are inflated balloons that are then lit from inside, and with an iridescent effect on the skin they’ve been piled up in a mini-maze next to the skyscraper to freely wander around and under as you want. It’s a very tactile display as the inflated bubbles are quite nice to touch -
Security could be a fly in the ointment for the IoT boom
Cyber security firm CUJO AI has produced a report on the state of cybersecurity. Telecoms.com got an early look at the findings and they paint a grim picture of the threats to IoT devices and home networks.
There are no shortage of cyber security reports, all of which provide a snapshot representative of the general situation based on the information the security firm or analyst has access to, but as sample sizes go this is a large one. Called ‘Cybersecurity Report 2022: Consumer Devices U -

Ode to the AltNets
Telecoms.com periodically invites expert third parties to share their views on the industry’s most pressing issues. In this piece Sarah Mills, Chief Revenue Officer at Neos Networks, looks at what it takes to succeed as a challenger fibre company in the UK.
In recent months, some telecoms incumbents have questioned the viability of the Alternative Network Provider (AltNet) business model. Their concern? That the delivery of extensive fibre, or overbuilding, across towns and cities cou -
Ofcom expands probe into BT contract information
UK comms regulator Ofcom thinks BT subsidiaries EE and Plusnet may be falling short in their obligations to provide ‘clear and simple’ contract information.
This latest development represents the expansion of an investigation Ofcom opened on 4 October last year, when it suspected EE wasn’t obeying the letter of new rules that had come into force a few months earlier. The specific rules in question are General Conditions C1.3 to C1.7 and C5.16, which you can find on page 26 of t -
Telia to book $2 billion in write-downs as economy bites
Telia Company’s fourth quarter results will include the best part of US$2 billion worth of impairment charges as the economic situation impacts on its Nordic businesses, the telco group has warned.
Sweden-based Telia revealed that a total impairment of 19.8 billion kronor (US$1.94 billion) will negatively impact on its operating income for the fourth quarter and full-year 2022. The telco is due to publish its 2022 results on Thursday.
The bulk of the various impairments making up the total -
Google joins tech cull by cutting 12,000 staff
Search giant Google has announced plans to make 12,000 redundancies, heaping further misery on tech sector workers.
According to this SEC filing, CEO Sundar Pichai circulated the bad news among employees on Friday, saying he was “deeply sorry” to have to have cut “incredibly talented people we worked hard to hire and have loved working with.”
As has become evident over the last few months, tech hiring expanded rapidly during the pandemic, as the sector convinced itself th -

The Gqeberha landing is the projec -
Government delays decision on TfL’s pensions reform
via ianvisits.co.uk
A decision about whether Transport for London’s (TfL) staff pensions should be changed as part of the funding settlement to keep London’s public transport running has been delayed.Under the terms of the funding settlement agreed upon last August, TfL sent a report to the Department for Transport (DfT) last October outlining a range of options that could see staff pensions reformed, and also an option for no change at all.
In a letter sent to TfL’s Interim Commissioner, Andy Lor -
London’s Alleys: Bells Alley, SW6
via ianvisits.co.uk
This tree lined alley in Parson’s Green is quite annoying as hardly anything seems to be known about it.The alley may be a legacy of ancient paths though, as it shows up as part of a rough road in John Rocque’s map of London from 1746, when all around here were still fields.
A large swathe of land to the south of the alley was leased around the same time by the two Chauncy sisters, daughters of Richard Chauncy, a director of the East India Company, who owed his own early wealth to in
