UK comms regulator Ofcom is worried that US tech giants have too much control over the news consumption of British voters.
A press release titled ‘Who controls the news we see online?’ set the scene for the now familiar hand wringing over the flow of information online, especially that which may have political influence. The electoral surprises of 2016 upset the established order and led to the desperate conclusion that the unwitting public must have been led astray by dark forces. T

The heritage railway restoring a GWR Diesel Railcar
via ianvisits.co.ukA heritage railway is looking to restore one of just three surviving GWR railcars, a type of train that was first introduced in 1933 and were in service right through to the 1960s. Although 38 of these single-unit railcars were built, just three now survive, and the Kent & East Sussex Railway (K&ESR) owns one of them.

Hypertropic hits out at mid-contract broadband price hikes
UK ISP Hypertropic says ‘big broadband providers’ are taking advantage of inflation rates to boost their revenues, and that is eroding trust in the industry.
Hyperoptic has taken a swipe at rival broadband providers, claiming new rules are required to change the way broadband plans with mid-contract price rises can be advertised, as the Committee for Advertising Practice prepares to close its consultation on the matter tomorrow.

Part of the Bakerloo line and London Overground to close for a week before Christmas
via ianvisits.co.ukPeople who use the Bakerloo line or the London Overground in northwest London will need to find alternative routes in late December as both lines will be closed for a week’s worth of engineering works.
For a whole week, between Saturday 17th and Friday 23rd December, Network Rail engineers will carry out major improvements to a 20-mile stretch of railway in north London that is used by both the Bakerloo line and the London Overground.

Romania 5G auction finally finishes but falls flat
Romania has completed the sale of spectrum suitable for rolling out 5G services after lengthy delays, but the process did not raise as much as the government might have hoped.
The three participants – Orange, Vodafone and Digi – together pledged €432.6 million for 420 MHz of frequencies in the 700 MHz, 1500 MHz, 2600 MHz and 3400 MHz-3800 MHz bands, regulator ANCOM disclosed, which was some way short of the full amount of spectrum the country had put up for sale.

Qualcomm launches its latest top-end smartphone chip
US mobile chip giant Qualcomm has unveiled the latest iteration of its flagship SoC, which will be powering many of the most expensive devices next year.
As we were led to believe almost a year ago, this year’s top-end SoC is called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Platform. Inevitably Qualcomm couldn’t resist an interim upgrade back in May of this year, which required a further tweak of its already convoluted naming scheme, but this is the main annual refresh.

Nokia and TPG Telecom claim 5G uplink speed record
Kit vendor Nokia and telecoms group TPG Telecom have achieved 5G uplink speeds of 2 Gbps in Australia, which they say is a first for the country.
The live demonstration used Nokia’s commercial AirScale Radio solution together with TPG Telecom’s 5G mmWave spectrum, with which the firms say they hit 5G uplink speeds of 2 Gbps at the Nokia 5G Futures Lab in Sydney, Australia.
The milestone will enable the firms to offer ‘ultra-high-performing, low-latency services for Industrial a -
Linux hopes to give telco cloud a Sylva lining
The recently-launched Linux Foundation Europe has set its sights on open source telco cloud.
On Tuesday, the group unveiled Project Sylva, which is tasked with creating a production-ready, telco grade cloud stack based on open source software. Such a thing is needed, claims LF Europe, in order to reduce complexity and fragmentation in the supply of telco and edge cloud infrastructure.
Addressing these challenges will ultimately accelerate cloud migration, LF Europe says. Project Sylva’s ac -
Give the gift of Museum Membership this Christmas
via ianvisits.co.ukIf you want to give something this Christmas that your recipient can use all year round, rather than socks and fragrances… give them membership of a museum they love.
Most museums have some form of membership scheme and usually offer a range of goodies, such as free entry for museums that charge an entrance fee, newsletters and the bigger venues tend to have private members’ events in the evenings or priority booking for public exhibitions.
As a present, it’s a very nice thing -
London Underground testing new step-free device at Jubilee line stations
via ianvisits.co.ukA miniature boarding ramp that can close the gap between tube trains and platforms is to be tested at a number of Jubilee line stations to see if it should be rolled out across the network. The bridging device is the same width as the boarding ramps already in extensive use across the network but is only 200mm in length.

However, a report that’s also just been published by Transport for London (TfL) that looks at how step-free access could be improved also found tha -
An eternal flame burning at an east London war memorial
