TfL delays contactless payments upgrade due to Ukraine war
Transport for London (TfL) has been forced to delay renewing the contract for its payment systems because the war in Ukraine is affecting a planned upgrade.
At the moment, the supply of Oyster and contactless payment systems is handled by a supply contract with Cubic. That contract was signed in 2014, and extended in 2017 to expire in 2025. As would be expected, TfL is currently in a process of inviting companies to bid to run the Revenue Collection Contract (RCC) when the current agreement expi

European General Court throws out €1 billion fine against Qualcomm
Chip firm Qualcomm won its fight against a €1 billion fine imposed on it by the European Commission for allegedly bribing Apple into using its chips.
The European General Court essentially decided that procedural irregularities in the initial investigation by the European Commission ‘affected Qualcomm’s rights of defence’, and has moved to annul the hefty fine.
The EC slapped Qualcomm with the €997 million ticket back in 2018 for what it called ‘abuse of dominan

Intel and Exfo unveil 5G fault detection tool
A new solution launched by Canadian telecoms testing company Exfo and US chip giant Intel promises operators the ability to monitor a 5G network in real time and more swiftly fix problems.
Going under the catchy title ‘Exfo’s full-stack assurance solution,’ the new service is pitched as a tool to enable 5G network operators to ‘identify and correlate service degradation issues’ and it supports ‘automation for cloud specific assurance regardless of whether faul

5G market expected to cope well with tough economic times
A difficult economic and political situation across the world is suppressing the mobile phone market, but the 5G sector is still coming up smelling of roses.
5G connections globally should reach 1.21 billion by the end of this year, well ahead of the 620 million figure from end-2021, according to new research from CCS Insight. The Covid-19 pandemic had a big impact on the technology’s early years, the analyst firm notes, but things are really starting to pick up now, despite ongoing troubl

Vodafone deploys wind and solar powered 4G mast
UK operator Vodafone has switched on a 4G phone mast in Wales loaded with a wind turbine, solar panels and on-site battery storage.
The ‘self-powering’ mast will provide 4G coverage to the community of Eglwyswrw, and Vodafone says it potentially removes the need for a connection to the national electricity grid – which if true certainly has application for providing connectivity to extremely remote areas.
The Crossflow Energy wind turbine can apparently generate power even in l

OneWeb lauds successful trial of in-flight LEO services
Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites could soon be used for in-flight broadband, following a successful test by UK-based OneWeb and its partners.
The test saw a Boeing 777 passenger plane connect to OneWeb’s network using a specially-designed terminal made by Stellar Blu, which signed a joint development agreement with OneWeb back in November last year. The terminal is named Sidewinder – hopefully after the snake and not the heat-seeking air-to-air missile – and incorporates electr

A feast of Tiffany diamonds has filled the Saatchi Gallery
Upmarket jewellery firm Tiffany has taken over the entire Saatchi Gallery and filled it with jewels from their collection and displays from their archive.
Ranging from tiny engagement rings right up to their recently acquired 80-carat Empire Diamond, there’s a heck of a lot of bling on display in a cluster of rooms each individually themed and decorated.
While the jewels sparkle and delight, I’d have to say that the design of the exhibition is in places more paste than diamond in wha
