The Natural History Museum’s Diplodocus has returned from its UK tour and will be going on display again inside the museum, for the rest of this year.
Dippy in the Hintze Hall January 2016
Dippy first arrived at the Museum back in 1905, after King Edward VII remarked how much he’d like to obtain a Diplodocus specimen while visiting the home of the millionaire industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie, who owned the bones of a specimen found in Wyoming in 1899, duly commissioned a repli

Ofcom opens investigation into Shell Energy’s telecoms division
UK comms regulator Ofcom has launched an investigation into Shell Energy, with regard to rules around end-of-contract and annual ‘best tariff’ notifications to broadband and landline customers.
Ofcom introduced new rules in 2020 which stated that broadband, mobile, home phone and pay-TV companies have to warn their customers when their minimum contract period is coming to an end, and how much they could save by signing up to a new deal, as well as remind any customers who remain out -

via ianvisits.co.uk
The gap between the funding that’s available and how much it will cost for Crossrail to complete the Elizabeth line has widened.
It had been known earlier this year that there was a shortfall of around £150 million needed to complete the railway, and at a GLA Transport Committee meeting in March, TfL’s Commissioner, Andy Byford indicated that the shortfall had increased to £174 million.
A letter from Crossrail’s CEO, Mark Wild to the Chair of Parliament’s Publ -
London Underground to resume normal Met line services next week
via ianvisits.co.uk
London Underground is resuming a normal Metropolitan line timetable from next week, after announcing an urgent cut in services on the Metropolitan line earlier this month due to problems with the wheels on its trains.
The problem is understood to have been related to a wheel lathe at Neasden depot, which is used to reprofile the wheels on Met line trains, and may have been misconfigured.
Apart from issues such as reducing long term wear on wheels and tracks, and reducing wheel noise, there&rsquo -

Smartphone shipments fell globally in Q1, dragged by a Chinese slowdown
Global smartphone shipments fell by 12.9% in Q1 2022 to 308 million units, representing the third consecutive quarter that figure has gone down, according to analyst firm Omdia.
Much of the drop can be attributed to s sharp fall in shipments by Chinese manufacturers due to a slowdown in the regional market, according to Omdia. Resurgent waves of Covid there has played havoc with supply chain, as major cities like Shenzhen and Shanghai have seen new and characteristically brutal lockdowns. The re -
Huawei’s steady decline continues
Chinese vendor Huawei has issued one of its minimal quarterly numbers bulletins and it reveals yet another fall in revenues.
For Q1 2022 Huawei says it brought in CNY131 billion in revenue, with a net profit margin of 4.3%. That’s all you get, no segmentation, year-on-year comparisons, or anything like that. Thankfully we wrote an equivalent report a year ago, which allows us to calculate that Huawei’s most recent revenues declined 14% YoY. Margin, meanwhile was 11.1% back then.

Doubt creeps into the mmWave business case
Question marks are appearing over the use of millimeter wave (mmWave) technology for 5G, with growth in investments in the sector slowing last year.
While the numbers do not directly point to problems in the mmWave market, particularly given that it outperformed expectations in the previous couple of years, it is not too much of a stretch to say that we still need some convincing on the use of the technology.
New statistics shared by Dell’Oro this week show 15%-20% growth in mmWave revenue -
UK govt announces new Open RAN guidelines
The government’s commitment to Open RAN has been growing steadily in recent years. The technology first appeared to come to their attention while the government was mulling whether to designate China’s Huawei a ‘high risk’ vendor and order its removal from UK networks back in early 2020. At the time, Prime Minister Boris Johnson notably called upon the telecoms industry to “tell us what the alternative is” and, since then, it appears that the answer has incre -
