Ericsson wants to put less energy into 5G from now on
Swedish kit vendor Ericsson got its main MWC announcement out of the way early with a refresh of its 5G RAN portfolio that focuses on energy efficiency.
The flagship dual-band FDD Radio 4490 apparently consumes 25% less power than the unit it replaces, which is nice, and it’s even a bit lighter too. There’s also a high power version that offers 50% more output than radios Ericsson cares to compare it to, but presumably consumes an equivalent amount more energy. They both still get aw

Planning today for the networks – and revenue opportunities – of tomorrow
How well operators plan their 5G network rollouts today has a direct impact on profitability in the future, and yet revenue increasingly comes from new, often untested services and business models. There’s no room for waste; the increasing configurability and density of modern networks means that CAPEX allocation must be highly precise, based on accurate predictions of business outcomes like revenue and QoE, and with a level of granularity from the national and regional map view right down

  • Orange is still struggling in Spain

Orange is still struggling in Spain
French telecoms group Orange hit its targets for the full year but a closer look at the numbers shows it’s still not having an easy ride in its home market, nor in neighbouring Spain.
Indeed, the company’s financials were – as is so often the case – buoyed by growth in the Middle East and Africa. Group revenues were essentially flat, with growth of 10.6% at the Africa and Middle East business helping to offset a 1.6% decline in France and a smaller fall in the rest of Eur

Italian operators reportedly beg government for debt relief
Having overbid for 5G spectrum a few years ago, Italian operators are apparently panicking now that the payments to the government are due.
This is according to Reuters, which got hold of a letter from Italian telecoms lobby group Assotelecomunicazioni (abbreviated, remarkably, to Asstel) to the Italian government. It pleaded with the state to allow a delay of payments, said to be in excess of €4 billion, that are due on winning auction bids later this year.
    Asstel itself doesn’t seem

DLR extension to Thamesmead raised in Parliament
The issue of the extension of the DLR to Thamesmead was raised in the House of Commons, although no commitments were offered to it being built.
There is a plan to link the DLR at Beckton on the north side of the Thames with Thamesmead on the south via a new bridge, as doing so will unlock a considerable amount of housing development on both sides of the river.Apart from a study in 2020, there is currently no funding for the DLR extension, which has been costed at around £800 million, for a

Next to Regent’s Park is an imposing modernist building, and in its basement, is a large room full of medical instruments that is also open to the public.
