UK operator group Vodafone and Finnish kit vendor Nokia have been mucking about with artificial intelligence to detect network anomalies.
On first inspection this seems like the kind on self-organizing/optimizing network (SON) tech that has been knocking around for years, so it’s not immediately obvious why both companies felt it was worth an announcement. Then again, we’re covering it, aren’t we?

See a model railway on Old Street
A few months ago, a large office window in Old Street gained a large model railway. It’s sort of based on the local area, but is more of an atmospheric representation than an exact replica, so no need to complain about the wrong trains/buses/whatever.
Sadly I can’t tell you more, as my enquiry to the apparent office occupiers, an office fit-out company did not get a reply.
So here are just some contextless photos of something lovely to look at.The model can be found at 5-23 Old Stree -
Virgin Media O2 part of consortium testing ubiquitous coverage in Cornwall
Darwin Innovation Group, Virgin Media O2, Amazon Web Services and others are trying out a technology that instantly switches between 5G and satellite connectivity.
The core tech is being championed by Darwin Innovation Group, which emerged last October with a bit of help from O2 and some satellite interests. The primary use-case for this ubiquitous coverage technology is the connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) space, which puts a premium on eradicating notspots for the obvious reasons. -
Huge mural appears on the side of a Holbon hotel
A few months ago, a huge mural appeared on the side of a hotel near Holborn, by the freehand mural painter, Dan Kitchener. The part-mural/part-graffiti is 125 feet tall and is Dan’s largest artwork today. It was painted by Dan and two assistant artists using brushes and rollers, and took 4-weeks to complete.
It shows images referencing significant and landmarks and historic events and figures from the area of Holborn/Covent Garden/Bloomsbury.It sits on the side of the NYX Hotel, which bran -
Dish does $5 billion network deal with AT&T
Dish has inked a mobile network services deal with AT&T that is worth in excess of US$5 billion over the next decade.
It’s essentially an MVNO and national roaming agreement. Under the terms of the deal Dish’s various mobile brands will use AT&T’s network, while its yet-to-be-launched 5G service will roam on AT&T’s infrastructure in areas where it does not yet have coverage of its own.
AT&T replaces T-Mobile US as Dish’s wholesale network partner, a -
Telstra in talks to acquire Digicel Pacific in bid to keep China at bay
Telstra has confirmed that it is working with the Australian government on a takeover bid for part of the Digicel group, a move that is being widely viewed as politically motivated.
The Australian incumbent issued a statement to the securities exchange following reports in the national press.
“In response to a story in The Age/Sydney Morning Herald (17 July 2021) Telstra has confirmed it has been in discussions regarding a potential transaction to acquire telecommunications company, Digice -
Photos from the HS2 tunnel site in northwest London
Next to the M25 in northwest London is a huge railway construction site that won’t connect with either of the two railway lines that run on either side of it and yet when it’s finished it will significantly increase the number of trains that commuters will be able to catch on those other lines.
This is HS2’s south portal site, and the largest of the railway sites that will build the new HS2 railway that aims to massively increase space on the railway for more commuter and regio -
Vodafone’s NB-IoT coverage reaches 98% of the UK
NB-IoT is a low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) technology, used for enabling efficient communications between devices that require long battery life and have low data demand. This makes the NB-IoT perfect for numerous applications that to not need to constantly transmit data, such as smart gas and water metres, environmental sensors…read more on TotalTele.com » -
Orange weighs Ethio Telecom stake
Ever since Ethiopia announced that it would begin liberalising its telecoms industry, almost two years ago, France’s Orange has shown considerable interest in making a play for the Ethiopian market. When the Ethiopian regulator announced that it would be making two new telco licences available for new market entrants, Orange was alongside the likes of MTN…read more on TotalTele.com » -
O2 tests 5G backed up satellite for connected vehicles
At the end of last year, O2 launched the UK’s first commercial 5G satellite lab, hoping to explore the complementary nature of the technologies for the development of autonomous vehicles. The Darwin SatCom Lab’s first task was to convert two vehicles into connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), then remotely operate them as they drove around the facility using both satellite and 5G connectivity…read more on TotalTele.com » -

Nokia and Vodafone using machine learning to nip network anomalies in the bud
This latest innovation is part of Vodafone’s strategy to deliver customers a ‘best on Vodafone’ experience through the introduction of new, more reliable and energy efficient digital technologies. Earlier this month, Vodafone switched its entire pan-European fixed and mobile networks over to electricity from 100% renewable sources. Based on Nokia Bell Labs technology…read more on TotalTele.com »
