Qualcomm and InterDigital among founders of new US 6G initiative
The US has created another 6G initiative and got a bunch of tech and telecoms giants on board from the start.
It’s called 6G@UT because it’s based at the University of Texas in Austin, a city that is vying to rival Silicon Valley as America’s tech hub. UT Austin reckons it was a major contributor to 5G and sees no reason why that shouldn’t continue to the next generation. The founding members are: AT&T, Interdigital, Nvidia, Qualcomm and Samsung, and the chances are t

TIM sticks by footy deal as competition watchdog launches investigation
Italy’s competition watchdog has launched an investigation into TIM’s exclusive deal with rights holder DAZN to stream top-flight football content, but the Italian telco is sticking to its story – that the deal is good for competition in the pay TV market.
The Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) said it will look into certain clauses in the DAZN/TIM distribution deal, both from a commercial point of view and technical; on that last point, the competit

Bid submitted to upgrade Sutton to Epsom Downs rail link
A single-track railway in southwest London could be doubled if plans by Sutton Council get the go-ahead.
The line, which runs between Sutton town centre and Epsom Downs opened in 1865 as a doubled-tracked line, but was cut back to a single track in the early 1980s.
It was built with double-tracks as at the time it opened, it was the closest station to Epsom racecourse, so was very busy on race days. Epsom Downs station at the end of the line was once so busy that it had nine platforms, but then

More tickets released for Buckingham Palace picnics this summer
More tickets are being released to the public to have picnics in Buckingham Palace’s back garden this summer.
As the normal summer opening of Buckingham Palace can’t happen, a couple of months ago they decided to let people have tours of the gardens, and bring a picnic along as well.
Demand was so high that it nearly took their website offline the evening they announced the picnic event, but they’ve now released more tickets for dates throughout July to September.

Vodafone UK and Mavenir collaborate over OpenRAN small cells
UK operator group Vodafone has enlisted the help of US software vendor Mavenir to see if they can add some OpenRAN secret sauce to small cells for businesses.
The two companies are among the most busy in the OpenRAN space, so its unsurprising to see them get the band back together for a spot of small cell action. This seems to be more about demonstrating that OpenRAN tech works in smaller form factors rather than some unique improvement offered to indoor connectivity.

London’s Pocket Parks: Calthorpe Community Garden, WC1
This community park and allotments on Grays Inn Road is a legacy of campaigning to prevent an office block from being built here.
Since the 19th century, the site had been occupied by W Cubitt and Co, builders, for a large timber workshop. By the 1940s, the building was a refrigerator manufacturer and had a walkway linking to some houses that used to sit on the corner of the road, presumably being used for offices.
The factory and the corner houses were badly damaged during WW2, and the land cle
