Jumping onto a bit of a hobby horse of mine as summer is coming, and that’s the vexed issue of air conditioning in the domestic home.
The UK is not generally considered to be hot enough to need air conditioning in houses as a routine thing to be included by builders or home improvers, and the need for air-con in the home is reduced by the fact that in the “before times”, people spent so much time in someone else’s building while working.
Yet, the domestic home, especially

A glowing earth fills the Painted Hall in Greenwich
Luke Jerram’s huge glowing earth has returned to Greenwich’s Painted Hall, filling the baroque space with a slowly rotating orb.
A bit like the artist’s previous work, the Moon at the Natural History Museum, from a distance this glowing orb feels almost like a flat sheet cut out and hung up, but as you approach the full scale of the scale model of the Earth becomes apparent. The internally-lit sculpture, measuring seven metres in diameter was created using NASA imagery and is an -
100 days of spectrum sluggishness in Portugal
Progress in Portugal’s controversial 5G spectrum auction has been so slow that the regulator has been forced to change the rules to enable more bidding rounds per day.
Wednesday marked the 100th day of bidding in the auction, in which the country’s established mobile operators are battling it out, albeit in a highly leisurely fashion, for airwaves across multiple bands: 700 MHz, 900 MHz, 2.1 GHz, 2.6 GHz and 3.6 GHz. The pace has been so sluggish that regulator Anacom is starting to -
US once more threatens to retaliate for Digital Services Tax with tariffs
Six countries have imposed special taxes on the revenues internet companies derive from their citizens and the US isn’t happy about it.
The US Trade Representative (USTR) has completed an investigation into the matter and, to everyone’s surprise, concluded government policy is beyond reproach. After having a really good look at it from all possible angles, it turned out the people who commissioned the investigation were right all along. Amazing.
As a result the USTR has imposed retal -
Three more “British Railways” totems for south London
Street artist Lionel Stanhope has completed three more of his distinctive railway station signs for Network Rail, at Malden Manor, Chessington North and Tolworth.
The design at Malden Manor is located directly above the station garden to the right of the railway bridge, while the bridge structures at Chessington North and Tolworth have been given local signs.
Lionel Stanhope is a street artist known for his distinctive typography.
Lionel Stanhope said: “I’m really excited to be part -
Deutsche Telekom shares 5G SA voice milestone but data still rules
Deutsche Telekom is trumpeting a new 5G Voice over New Radio (VoNR) milestone, but while voice remains important, its impact on the data experience is what really matters.
The German incumbent has announced the successful completion of what it says is the world’s first 5G VoNR call in an end-to-end multi-vendor environment. The call, carried out at a Deutsche Telekom test facility in Warsaw, put VoNR over a 5G standalone network and ran voice and data sessions in parallel. The network vend -
Vodafone and friends find a way to boost OpenRAN capacity
In a lab test led by Vodafone some AI special sauce was used to significantly boost the capacity of a multi-vendor OpenRAN set up.
Joining the radio access network fun were Cohere Technologies, VMware, Capgemini Engineering, Intel and Telecom Infra Project. They cobbled together a new type of RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) that is positively dripping with artificial intelligence, which made the various components work so well together that the capacity of the RAN was doubled.
It looks like Coh -
Over 12,000 people blocked from TfL services due to lack of face covering
Over 12,000 people have been stopped from using a TfL transport service for refusing to wear a face mask since the regulations came into effect, according to the latest figures from TfL.
Fortunately, TfL says that face-covering compliance overall across its services is around 90% across their network, which your correspondent would pretty much agree with on his occasional trips, even if noses hanging out is still surprisingly prevalent.
According to TfL’s figures, up to 31st May, enforceme -
Give yourself a pat on the back for getting through the last year
The telecoms industry wasn’t about to let the matter of a global pandemic cramp its style, so the Glotels are open once more to give you the chance at the recognition you deserve.
Now in its 8th year, the Global Telecoms Awards has consistently represented and acknowledged the most ground-breaking innovations and best achievements of the telecoms ecosystem. Last year we weren’t able to host our customary glitzy winners evening in person, for obvious reasons, but we’re confident -
London’s Pocket Parks: Salters’ Gardens, EC2
This is a sunken garden not far from the Barbican that until recently was a little known space hidden from view by 1970s office blocks.
Today it’s been opened up and made far more public following the London Wall redevelopment. You will notice the high brick wall running along the side of the park, and that the original Roman Wall, albeit with mostly medieval repairs. The presence of the Roman Wall though tells us something else about this park, it used to be a moat. The outside of the wall -
Vodafone and partners show off 5G boost with RAN Intelligent Controller tech
The successful trial is the latest step in building a cost-effective Open RAN ecosystem that will benefit Vodafone customers. In a test laboratory, the companies increased the capacity of a 5G cell site by two-fold using a programmable, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) supporting a mix of Open RAN components from multiple vendors. This collaboration represents a key milestone in demonstrating the potential of RIC sitting at the heart of an Open RAN -

Aviva and Darwin partner for autonomous vehicles using O2 5G
Back in October last year, O2 announced the launch of the first commercial laboratory for 5G and satellite communications in the UK as part of Project Darwin, a four-year trial programme supported by O2 and the European Space Agency. The facility, Darwin SatCom Lab, was opened in Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, allowing companies to explore solutions for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) using both 5G and satellite communication…read more on TotalTele.co
