UK broadband speeds increased by 25% last year – Ofcom
In 2020 the average download speed of UK residential broadband services increased by 25% from 64 Mbps to 80.2 Mbps, according to new Ofcom research.
The communications regulator’s UK Home Broadband Performance report polled a sample of UK households last November. It turned out that upload speeds are improving even more rapidly, improving by 54% from 14 Mbps to 21.6 Mbps.
These improvements clearly coincide with the fibre rollout. While only a small proportion of the country currently has -
Bidders line up for Optus’ A$2 billion towers sale
Australia’s telcos have not moved as quickly as their European counterparts, but 2021 is shaping up to be the year of towers sales down under.
Optus has not divulged a lot about its planned towers transaction, but reports in the financial press this week suggest that things are shaping up nicely.
Parent company Singtel is offering 60%-70% of its Optus unit’s towers to would-be investors via an auction that is being run by Bank of America, the Australian Financial Review reported. Acc -

BT numbers disappoint but the future looks promising

An archive of aerial photos of London
There’s an archive of aerial photos of London held by the University of Cambridge, many of them are recent enough to look familiar, and yet ever so slightly strange. The Cambridge University Collection of Aerial Photography (CUCAP) is the result of airborne survey campaigns which were started in 1947 by the pioneering JK St Joseph. Since then the collection has grown to almost 500,000 images of obliques and verticals in black and white, colour and infra-red.
That’s a research archive, -
Germany, UK, Italy still clinging onto copper
Europe is making solid progress in both the rollout and take-up of full fibre connections, according to new market data published this week, but there is still plenty of work to, particularly by three of the continent’s major economies.
Presenting their latest FTTH market panorama, which tracks progress over the 12 months to September 2020, the FTTH Council Europe and IDATE noted that many countries where legacy infrastructure still dominates have altered their strategies and are increasin -
Kennington tube station is changing from a Zone 2 station to a Zone 1/2 station
Kennington station, which is currently in Zone 2 is to become a mixed Zones 1 and 2 station from this Sunday (16th May) as part of the preparations for the Northern line extension.
At the moment, Kennington is in Zone 2, but the new stations on the Northern line extension will be in Zone 1. This causes the anomaly that people in Battersea and Nine Elms living in Zone 1 would otherwise need to pass through Zone 2 to get into Central London.
The change was a condition of the funding agreement for -

Just inside the M25 in northwest London, HS2 has powered up its first tunnel boring machine, which will head northwards under the Chilterns.
TBM before shipping to the UK (c) HS2
Starting today and operating 24 hours a day, it will take around three years for the tunnel boring machine (TBM), called Florence, to dig the 10-mile long tunnel under the Chiltern hills.
At 170 metres in length, the 2,000 tonne TBM is also the largest ever used on a UK rail project. As is traditional, all TBMs are give -

Over half of European homes now have access to FTTH
In the UK today, telecoms media is consumed with BT’s announcement that it is increasing the pace of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) rollout, upping its 2026 target from 20 million premises to 25 million. But, as important as this news is for the UK, it should be remembered that country currently lags behind a number of key European rivals when it comes to fibre coverage and these rivals are also rolling out fibre at a blistering pace. Now, the latest data from the FTTH Council Europe h -
New Proximus tech extends lifespan of copper networks

In vino veritas: TIM’s 5G vineyards and the next steps for smart agriculture
Back in February, TIM announced a new strategic plan for 2021–2023 called ‘Beyond Connectivity’, part of which involved exploring connectivity opportunities beyond the traditional telco space. One such sector that presents a myriad of opportunities is agriculture, where the deployment of 5G can help farmers to not only improve their crop yields and operational efficiency, However, building relationships new partners and exploring new verticals is no easy task for a telco, -
