Only for a two days, and it was an advertising takeover stunt, but Westminster tube station temporarily became Westminster Jungle station. The Times newspaper said that the “campaign reflects the increasingly raucous state of politics, breaking out of the confines of a zoo, into the wilderness of the jungle”. The animals have broken free from their benches and nature has taken over, as they roam the jungle and take hold of the House of Commons.

The King Edward VII Jewish Memorial Drinking Fountain
Surrounded by a market that fills the street can be found what looks like an old memorial stone, but is much more interesting than that. Often surrounded by piles of rubbish from the market, this is a reminder less of Regal heritage than of recent immigrants to the country. The area today is largely known for its Asian population, but was once home to a large Jewish community, and it was they who commissioned the water fountain in 1912, a couple of years after the death of King Edward VII.

The roundel that got cancelled
There’s a display in the Transport Museum of roundels used by TfL, but one of them shouldn’t be there. It’s the STREETS roundel, and was introduced to highlight the areas of London’s roads that are managed by TfL rather than by the local councils.
Originally called Street Management, the London Streets name was introduced in April 2007. Sadly, the roundel was dropped in 2014, following a review by TfL of its branding strategy.

See inside St Bartholomew-the-Less church
Just around the corner from the grand and impressive St Bartholomew-the-Great church is its smaller cousin, the Less. It’s a good old fashioned church with a 15th century tower, a rather odd internal layout, and what’s claimed to be the oldest medieval wooden bell frame within the City of London. There’s been a church on this site from 1184 and sits within the St Bartholomew’s Hospital site from when it was a monastery. The church’s tower and west façade date -
