IBC 2019: Linear TV isn’t dead just yet
This might sound like a very bold and short-sighted statement, but thanks to the development of IP-based standards, traditional broadcasters might just be able to survive in the digital economy.
This is of course not a statement which suggests business is as usual, there are major restructures and realignments which need to occur to future-proof the business, but linear TV and traditional broadcasters can survive in the cut-throat world of tomorrow.
The change which is being forced onto the worl -

Elliot set to challenge AT&T leadership over media strategy – report
The apparent anointing of John Stankey as the next AT&T CEO is reportedly what prompted Elliott to announce its activist intentions.
Right now this insight comes courtesy of the WSJ alone, which has chatted to some people who think they know what they’re talking about. The report says AT&T Randall Stephenson plans to call it a day soon and has been grooming his mate John Stankey to take over. Stankey was recently promoted the specially-created role of COO, which would be easy to vi -
Photos from London Underground’s Bank station upgrade
The new entrance to Bank tube station, being added as part of a major upgrade itself hit a major milestone when the roof was “topped out” last week.
The new entrance, which will face onto Cannon Street, near to the existing Monument entrance will provide direct access to the Northern line, as well as connecting a new moving walkway to the Central line – making access from Monument to those two lines much easier.
Work will now continue to fit out the entrance, with the next stag -
Apple and Disney belatedly sever corporate ties
Disney CEO Bob Iger has been on the Apple board for eight years but, with the two companies now competing directly in the SVOD market, he has resigned.
Last week Apple officially launched its Apple TV+ subscription video on demand service last week, thus placing it in direct competition with Disney, which is also set to get into the SVOD game with, you guessed it, Disney+. For some reason the two companies left it until the very last minute for Iger to clear off, despite the two competing servic -
IBC 2019: European Broadcasting Union joins FANG regulatory choir
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is the latest organization to start singing the praises of greater regulation, transparency and accessibility for the internet giants.
It is starting to become a tune to which we are all accustomed to, and it should come as little surprise the victims of aggressive disruption are calling for greater control, but the EBU has joined the regulatory choir at IBC 2019. Speaking during the conference, Noel Curran, Director General of the EBU, fired the shots acros -

London’s Alleys: Tower Court, WC2
This is a quiet little space just a heartbeat from the bustling Covent Garden.Although Covent Garden was one of the earlier areas of London to be developed, this patch of land remained open fields for far longer, known in 1670s as Cock and Pye Fields.
It remained empty while all around built up as the land was known to be particularly wet, and was later surrounded by a deep ditch that ran around the fields and down to the Thames. The name came from a local pub which was particularly noted for se -

Meet the finalists: The WCA 2019 CTO of the Year
Earlier this month, Total Telecom released the shortlist for the World Communication Awards 2019 and with the event itself just around the corner, what better time than to take a closer look at the finalists from one of the most hotly contested categories – the much coveted CTO of the Year award.
