ZTE rediscovers profit at the conclusion of a nightmare year
Chinese kit vendor ZTE actually managed to turn a profit in Q3 2018 now that everyone has stopped victimising it.
The RMB 564 million was still down 65% year-on-year, but compared to the utter car crash that has been its quarterly announcements in the intervening time, any kind of profit represents a pretty significant victory in its own right. The amount of profit was right in the middle of the guidance offered at the end of August and ZTE is clearly desperate to start talking about something o -
CommScope likes the look of Arris – report
Reuters reckons US networking vendor CommScope is seriously courting UK cable and set top box company Arris.
The report, which cites those shadowy ‘people familiar with the matter’ that are so often responsible for such leaks, just claims the two companies are in talks for CommScope to acquire Arris. The exponentially-growing public demand for streaming video is apparently one of the big drivers behind the talks.
The market values of the two companies aren’t too far apart, but -

The rumours were true – Philip Jansen will be the next BT boss
A week after the news was widely leaked, BT has confirmed that its next Chief Exec will be current Worldpay boss Philip Jansen.
Various factors made the move seem plausible, including the fact that Jansen had already resigned from Worldpay and the conspicuous lack of any other viable candidates revealing themselves in the months since the search to replace Gavin Patterson commenced.
Jansen has plenty of top-table pedigree, having been the main man at Worldpay for five years, during which he took -
Blockchain Set to Play Key Role in Telco Operations: Analyst
Blockchain technology is set to be used by telcos in multiple applications across all areas of operations in coming years, according to an industry analyst who has delved into the potential use of the digital ledger technology (DLT) in the space.
James Crawshaw, a senior analyst at Heavy Reading, says communications service providers (CSPs) see significant potential for the use of the much-hyped technology, which is best known for underpinning cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
“Today, CSPs -
Nokia gives thumbs up for Q3 but warns of further ‘cost efficiencies’
Nokia has released its financial results for the last three months, which look pretty positive, though job losses have put a slight dampener on the party.
Net sales for the last three months stood at €5.4 billion, slightly down on the same period in 2017, though when currency fluctuations are taken into account, it does seem Nokia is navigating the sluggish telco industry fairly effectively. The management team promised an improved performance towards the end of the year, and it seems to be -
Vodafone next on the 5G ‘first’ campaign trail
We thought we were safe from misleading 5G claims in the UK, but Vodafone has become the next telco to push the boundaries on what is deemed an acceptable ‘truth’.
The statement this morning is a relative bold one; “Vodafone first to switch on full 5G in the UK”, though it is heavily nuanced. Despite it sounding like a 5G bonanza for us to get excited about, these are trials, commercial services are not being offered to customers, once again proving honest statements and -

Keep Running to Lead the Race
“It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place”, this is a dialog between Alice and the Red Queen in the film Alice in Wonderland and also perfectly depicts today CSPs’ status quo. CSPs were leading the technology and innovation in the past decade, but almost lost the battlefield to market challengers or disruptors: some of them are well-known web-scale companies, while some are start-ups that may disrupt the world in an unexpected manner. We all recognize that -
NetComm: “Developing Easy To Deploy Solutions Comparable To FTTH Is Key To Connecting Lives”
Berlin, Germany, 25 October 2018: With 50% of houses still connected to less than 100Mbps, a combination of solutions comparable to Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) is essential to efficiently provide the speeds required by end-users, according to NetComm Marketing and Communications Director Els Baert. Speaking on the final day of Broadband World Forum 2018, Baert said that although fibre assets have expanded, connections are growing slower than expected. As FTTH is time-consuming and expensive to roll -
Microsoft’s resurgence continues, driven by strength in cloud and gaming
Microsoft’s results demonstrated a continued upward trajectory, with the cloud and gaming units standing out with particularly strong performances.
Since wrapping up the last financial year by breaking the $100 billion annual revenue mark three months ago, Microsoft should not have been immune to the recent financial market gloom hanging over the technology sector. But the Q1 results of its financial year 2019 published on Wednesday are telling a different story.
On corporate level, the to -
