Whoever wins the autonomous car race will make a fortune, so Intel is doubling down efforts. Millions are being directed towards R&D, and building its own mapping database is another good move.
Speaking at CES in Las Vegas, Mobileye (an Intel business) CEO Amnon Shashua said two million cars from BMW, Nissan and Volkswagen will all be fitted with a front-facing camera, which will aggregate location and environment data in the cloud, building high-definition maps with Mobileye’s Road Ex

Exclusive: new Synchronoss CMO explains her move
Embattled cloud services vendor Synchronoss has managed to land respected telecoms exec Mary Clark to head up its marketing. We found out how.
Clark is very familiar to Telecoms.com, having been a regular guest on our podcasts. Synchronoss, too, is a company we came to learn a fair bit about late last year when writing our investigation into its remarkable recent history entitled What the hell is going on at Synchronoss? So imagine our surprise when we found out that Clark was leaving her cosy g -

Digital Minister visits Tate Modern instead of figuring out what job actually is
Two days after reshuffling the UK cabinet, key roles are yet to be handed out, but DCMS Minister Michael Ellis still found some time to visit the Tate Modern for Modigliani exhibition.
Previous Minister for Digital Matt Hancock received a promotion, now being the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, essentially in charge of the entire department, though he has a few new names to keep in line. Ellis and Margot James are two new Ministerial entries to the department, thou -
Multiplay time in Sweden as Tele2 buys Com Hem for $3.3 billion
The global trend towards consolation across telecoms, and content has reached Sweden with the acquisition of cable player Com Hem by operator group Tele2 for $3.3 billion.
The general theory behind multiplay is for a company to try to become a one-stop-shop for all a customer’s communications needs, which includes the internet and content streamed from it. Despite the fact that many big bets on content from the likes of BT have yet to deliver much return, operators don’t seem to have -
Ofcom’s Annual Plan – light on details but broadly positive
To be fair to the UK watchdog, the full plan won’t be released for a couple of weeks, but this morning’s ‘meeting to plan a meeting’ at least showed some positive steps forward.
And it certainly promises to be a busy one for Ofcom. “This will be the first full year, where we are equally weighted media and economic regulator,” said CEO Sharon White at an event at Ofcom Towers in London.
This is perhaps one of the explanations for the blue-sky thinking with a la -
T-Mobile US claims first nationwide NB-IoT plan
Disruptive US operator T-Mobile US reckons it’s turning the domestic IoT market on its head by significantly undercutting its competitors.
This is, of course, what TMUS does – undercut the competition then shove some kind of populist, Robin Hood narrative down everyone’s throat. In this case the company has gone all in on NB-IoT technology and has used it to launch an IoT plan that costs $6 per year, which it says is a tenth of the price of Verizon’s Cat-M-based plans.
