• Moisture, dust and rats – the problems connecting London’s Tubes

We’ve joked before about how desperate Londoners are to avoid conversation, but now there is political clout behind the drive for connecting the London Underground. And it’s more complicated than you would think.
The last couple of months has seen London Mayor Sadiq Khan promise connectivity on the Underground. We all cheered, because avoiding eye contact with other passengers becomes awkward after a while, especially if you know them. Connectivity on the Tube is now a necessity. And
  • Apple moves to address the scourge of device addiction

Some Apple investors have had a go at it for corrupting children so it’s thinking of introducing more parental controls.
Jana Partners and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System collectively own around $2 billion of Apple stock (around 0.2% of the total). They also have little time for festive larks, opting instead to spend the Christmas period drafting a po-faced open letter to Apple, urging it to act on the public health ticking time-bomb that is iOS devices.
    They publish
  • Could we exist in a world without Apple or Samsung? Maybe…

Some would argue the smartphone is the most important technological breakthrough of the last 50 years, but Google could be creating a world where the device actually becomes redundant.
It all sounds very far-fetched, and of course, there would have to be an incredible change in society for this scenario to exist, but stick with us for a second. Irrelevant as to how unlikely it sounds, it is a perfectly plausible scenario; Google could architect a digital value chain where the smartphone is actua

  • Altice: jumping cash flash

Credit due for a convincing patching up of telecoms and cable group
  • Altice does some more corporate tinkering

French telecoms conglomerate Altice has announced a good old reorganization in the light of its dodgy 2017.
The big move involves spinning-off Altice USA, which already has its own US stock market listing. The core company – Altice NV – will relinquish its 67.2% interest in Altice USA by handing it over to its own shareholders as well $1.5 billion in cash from Altice USA. This all seems rather convoluted but the upshot is greater separation in the running of the two corporate silos.
  • Huawei still viewed with suspicion by US officials – report

Huawei’s reported plans to sell its devices through a major US domestic operator have fallen through as the giant struggles to shake concerns over links with Chinese government spooks.
This could be viewed as nothing short of a massive blow for Huawei, whose devices have been gathering steam worldwide over the last couple of months. We spoke to a Huawei spokesperson who highlighted the team has never officially confirmed it was in discussion with AT&T, as being wide

  • State net neutrality rules are nothing more than a PR stunt – analyst

We’ve found someone who has as little faith in the convictions and principles of politicians as we do!
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has faced an interesting twist in opposition following the reversal of net neutrality rules, as individual states look to navigate around the FCC’s position instead of combatting it. California, Washington, New York and Rhode Island are the states leading the charge for the moment, attempting to introduce their own net neutrality rules. But for Roslyn Layton of
  • The world looks to Germany for social media censorship precedent

A new German law designed to prevent, remove and prosecute ‘hate speech’ online has come into full effect, which could set a precedent for the rest of the world.
The law is called Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz, mercifully abbreviated to NetzDG. Germany started to implement it last year, but only unleased its full force at the start of this year. Inevitably some Germans with a position on this law have sought to test its boundaries, with both polemicists and satirists having social medi
