Twitter faces an existential crisis
Twitter has announced its quarterly earnings and while the numbers were a bit better than expected Twitter now has to work out what the point of it is.
The company, which arguably normalized the social media medium for the internet age, has been having a bit of a tough time of it recently. Fresh off the heartbreak of not being able to find an acquirer, CEO Jack Dorsey put on a brave face to announce the company’s quarterly financial results, and to be honest, not bad.
The company post -

Qualcomm spends $47 billion on NXP for car, IoT and NFC chips
As rumoured mobile chip giant has decided to accelerate its diversification by dropping $47 on Dutch chip-maker NXP.
Generally associated with NFC chips, NXP also has solid positions in automotive, microcontrollers and a bunch of other embedded applications. Qualcomm is saying this acquisition – its biggest ever – will give it a leg up in the IoT world in general. It’s probably safe to say the Qualcomm account manager at ARM is now in a strong position to ask for a pay-rise.

Apple is just having one of those weeks
We all have those weeks. You wake up late one day, spill your coffee the next and then forget about a meeting on the third. Apple seems to be having one of them.
After a less than enthusiastic quarterly earnings call where revenues saw a third consecutive year-on-year decline, Apple has now announced it will be delaying the launch of the much anticipated (and slightly controversial) wireless AirPod earphones. The initial plans had been to release the new earphones in October, though the team has -
Nokia battens down the hatches – 2017 is going to be rough
Like its Scandinavian counterpart, Nokia is having a challenging time of it at the mo, and it’s all hands on deck for a tough 2017.
It had a pretty stinky first half of the year, then had to go and lay off a bunch of dudes (after kind of fudging the announcement), and now it’s saying 2017 isn’t going to be anything special as well. Gah!
Net sales for the Finnish kit vendor were down pretty much across the board, with Nokia Technologies being the only department of note to -

The numbers are in and the consensus among analysts is that the smartphone market returned to modest growth thanks to Chinese brands in developing regions.
Strategy Analytics, from which we derive the majority of the shipments numbers not publicly disclosed for our summary table below, reckons the market grew by 6%, with Chinese brands Huawei, Oppo and Vivo providing nearly all the growth.
“This was the smartphone industry’s fastest growth rate for a year,” said SA’s Lind -
Openreach bashing doesn’t have material impact on BT revenues
Despite the BT bashing which has been going on for what seems like forever, it would not seem to have had a material effect on the revenues of the organization.
While it has not been a spectacular quarter for BT, it’s has been far from a car-crash. The team met analyst expectations, towed the line and the brand is still proving to be the dominant player in the broadband market despite efforts of competitors to have a dig. Revenues were up 35% across the board, but when adjusted for th -
