Chip rivals ARM and Intel have both announced major new IoT launches at exactly the same time, opening a new front in their long-running war.
ARM classifies its Cortex-branded chip designs according to their relative size and power. ‘A’ stands for ‘application processors’ such as the ones that provide the brains in smartphones. ‘R’ stands for ‘realtime’ and tends to apply to communications processors such as those found in modems. ‘M’ s

How the Government’s broadband targets can be achieved, wirelessly
Telecoms.com periodically invites expert third party professions to comment on the industry’s biggest challenges today. In this piece, Jaime Fink, co-founder of Mimosa, explains how wireless technologies can help meet the Government’s broadband expectations of 10 Mbps for all.
Internet service providers (ISPs) in the UK are under increasing pressure from consumers, businesses and government bodies to deliver more ubiquitous, ‘superfast’ broadband. The government’s D -
Google says Fibre is going so well it’s pausing it
Google has decided that it’s doing so well with fibre that it needs to take a break and give everyone else a chance.
That was the picture it tried to paint on its latest blog post – bizarrely entitled “Advancing our amazing bet”. The post was written by – spoiler alert – the now former CEO of Google’s Access division Craig Barratt, who said it’s all been a great journey and it’s doing so well and it’s on a great trajectory… so he -

Apple in decline, but at least its phones don’t blow up
Apple has released its Q3 2016 results which revealed another year-on-year revenue decline, but CEO Tim Cook can still take some comfort in knowing his phones are still allowed on planes.
Revenue for the period was $46.9 billion, down 9% from 2015’s $51.5 billion, so the team will hardly be searching the back of the sofa for loose change, though it is the third consecutive quarter in which it has reported a year-on-year decline. The news was not unexpected, as the global sma -
Ericsson appoints VC board member Börje Ekholm as CEO, market unimpressed
It turns out Ericsson didn’t have to look to far to replace Hans Vestberg after appointing a long-time board member and representative of one of its biggest shareholders.
Börje Ekholm is currently CEO of Patricia Industries, which is the part of venture capital company Investor AB that focuses on unlisted companies. He was previously CEO of Investor AB for ten years. Investor AB is the largest single shareholder in Ericsson and has 21.5% of its voting rights so it’s perhaps -
Multi-cloud is the only way to meet data demands – Openstack Foundation
Speaking at the Openstack Summit, the Openstack Foundation’s Executive Director Jonathan Bryce threw another buzzword into the mix for us to consider; multi-cloud.
While the technology industry is seemingly awash with buzzwords and the latest trends, the Openstack Foundation has pinned its future on the development of a multi-cloud culture. While it may sound similar to a hybrid proposition, multi-cloud not only takes into account the different topologies, but also different vendor platfor -

Vodafone gets away with just a £4.3 million fine for billing balls-up
Like a naughty school child, Vodafone has been given a monumental bollocking by Headmaster Ofcom today, and walked out with a £4.6 million fine for being a very naughty boy.
The fine comes from billing malpractice and generally being rubbish at dealing with complaints brought up by customers. We covered the intricacies of the Ofcom investigation earlier this year, but to recap:
Ofcom launched two investigations.
The first investigation found that more than 10,000 Vodafo -
