The FCC has announced that it has passed its Spectrum Frontiers proposal, which will dramatically accelerate the launch of 5G in the US. Following the vote, the first 5G services may now be as close as next year.

FCC frees up 24 GHz+ spectrum for 5G amid dissent
US telecoms regulator the FCC has announced the availability of 11 GHz of high frequency spectrum has been made available for use by 5G.
Claiming the US is the first country in the world to make such a move, the FCC has freed up licensed spectrum in the 28 GHz (27.5-28.35 GHz), 37 GHz (37-38.6 GHz), and 39 GHz (38.6-40 GHz) bands, and established a new unlicensed band at 64-71 GHz.

US operator T-Mobile US is offering its subscribers free, unlimited data to play hit mobile game Pokémon GO at part of its T-Mobile Tuesday promotion.
TMUS CEO John Legere, known for his ability to generate publicity, was quick to jump on the fad, tweeting the promotion yesterday alongside a photo of himself with a Pokémon in the background. His company is also offering other Pokémon GO related rewards, such as virtual currency.

BT continues to gain fixed-line share at TalkTalk’s expense
Market researcher Kantar Worldpanel has revealed that BT has been the biggest beneficiary of TalkTalk’s struggles, increasing its share of the UK home services market.
Kantar groups fixed-line, broadband and premium TV into the ‘home services’ bundle and tracks overall market share. BT, it says, has increased its share by 7.8 percentage points in the past year, mainly at the expense of TalkTalk, which has been plagued by security breaches.
