• MTN Nigeria fine reduced by two thirds

  African operator group MTN has had the fine imposed on it by the Nigerian government reduced by two thirds after lengthy negotiations.
  MTN was initially fined around $5.2 billion late last year for failing to disconnect millions of unregistered SIM cards in Nigeria, some of which had been associated with criminal activity. It was initially given just two weeks to pay the huge fine but, in hindsight, that was just an initial negotiating position.

• Nokia boosts fixed cable portfolio with Gainspeed acquisition

  Nokia has acquired US startup and cable access specialist Gainspeed in a bid to bolster its fibre access portfolio.
  Gainspeed specialises in a virtualized converged cable access programme (CCAP), which essentially distributes the access architecture and pushes DOCSIS, the data over cable standard, closer to the Ethernet node. The result is an extended fibre transmission distance, expanded capacity and improved performance for the customer.
