CEO Satya Nadella didn't think it was worth celebrating when Microsoft became the world's most valuable company: 'That’s just not stable' (MSFT)
2018 was a fantastic year for Microsoft shareholders.
But Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told journalists Monday that the price of Microsoft's shares, or its stint as the world's most valuable company, wasn't the kind of metrics that thrill him.
Instead, Nadella says that it's more instructive to measure the impact that Microsoft has on the economies in which in participates.
2018 was a standout year for Microsoft shareholders. But that success wasn't a focus for Microsoft's CEO Satya N -
Netflix's 18% price hike shows it got too comfortable being the only game in town, and it could be a costly mistake (NFLX, DIS, T, CMCSA)
Netflix's price hike, announced Tuesday, could hurt the company eventually, if not immediately, the Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter says.
Customers may not notice it right away, he said in an interview, but could pay more attention later this year when Disney launches a rival service with movies and shows that are no longer on Netflix.
He said that few consumers were likely to choose more than one pure streaming service and that Netflix's price hike had left it vulnerable to price competition.Ne -
Amid fears of an impending recession, some employees at Silicon Valley's IPO-bound startups say they're starting to get anxious
2019 was supposed to be a blockbuster year for tech companies going public — but the volatility of the public markets is making some employees at IPO-bound tech companies nervous.
We spoke to a current employee at Uber and a current employee at Airbnb. Both companies are expected to hold their long-awaited IPOs this year.
The Uber employee says that there's a lot of anxiety within the company over the company's valuation — conflicting reports have said that Uber could go -
Apple needs to get serious about video. Here are 3 Hollywood studios it could buy to boost its new streaming service. (AAPL)
Apple should be in the hunt for a video content company, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said in a new report.
The company's future growth is dependent on its services business, and a streaming video offering is expected and needed to drive that business, Ives said.
Ives think the company has several potential and notable targets.Dan Ives thinks the time has come for Apple to open up its wallet and buy a piece of Hollywood.
Like others on Wall Street, Ives, an analyst who covers the iPhone maker for We -
The government shutdown is in day 29 and has shattered the record for the longest shutdown in history
The government shutdown is now in its 29th day, far surpassing the record for the longest of the modern era.
This is the 21st time the federal government has had a funding lapse since the modern budgeting process began.

MORGAN STANLEY: There's a corner of the market perfectly positioned to boom if Wall Street's worst recession fears come true
Investors are pricing in a possible recession as dark clouds gather over the US economy and corporate America.
This nervousness could send the S&P 500 tumbling below its December lows, according to Mike Wilson, the chief US equity strategist at Morgan Stanley.
Wilson provided an investing recommendation that Morgan Stanley said it would follow "almost regardless of what's going on" — and even if stocks continue selling off.A recession this year or next would not -
Forget FANG — a $135 billion investor says a new group of stocks is poised to dominate the market going forward
For years, mega-cap tech companies ruled the stock market as investors happily piled in to them despite stretched valuations.
Don Townswick, the director of equities portfolio management at the $135 billion investment firm Conning, says the party is over for the formerly dominant group.
Townswick outlines the areas of the stock market he thinks will overtake mega-cap tech and lead major indexes in 2019.Way back in the halcyon days of early to mid-2018, the mega-cap tech cohort known belovedly as -
A huge number of economists agree we need a policy to fight climate change — but lawmakers aren't getting on board
Top American economists from both sides of the aisle see a carbon tax as the most cost-effective way to address climate change.
In a letter out this week, forty-five of them said climate change was "a serious problem calling for immediate national action."
But lawmakers remain bitterly partisan on climate action, especially carbon taxes.
What do eight recent Republican White House economic advisers have in common with their Democratic counterparts? They think the US needs to tax carbon in order t -
A decline in Facebook usage might not be the doomsday scenario for the company that many are predicting (FB)
Facebook users are using Facebook less — but that's not necessarily the end of the world for the company.
An analyst argues that television's revenues increased for years after it hit peak viewership, suggesting a way forward for Facebook.
And the company also has Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger at its disposal — all of which could be considerably more monetized than they are now.A key question confronting Facebook in 2019 is whether Facebook's nightmare year of scandals will have -
Uber and Lyft's IPOs will trigger competition at Google; hedge funds cut stock-pickers; hot marijuana IPOs
Dear Readers,
This week's stories included lots of bank earnings (bottom line: bond trading slumped, but execs said the markets are improving). We broke down Wall Street's (skeptical) reaction to a $22 billion fin-tech megadeal. And we talked to a handful of tech bankers who sighed that although 2019 was supposed to be the year of the multi-billion IPO, it's turning into a 's---show' (their words).
I went down a bit of a rabbit hole this week after reading our reporter Dan DeFrances -
A $1 trillion strategist lays out the looming worst-case scenario of the government shutdown, and how investors should safeguard their money
Stocks have rallied amid the longest government shutdown in history.
But as the stalemate in Washington drags on, there's building uncertainty about what it means for stocks
Kristina Hooper, the chief global market strategist at Invesco, which oversees $926 billion in assets, shared with Business Insider what the breaking point could be, and why it's not a far-reaching prospect. Stock market investors are still largely shrugging off the longest US government shutdown in history.

MoviePass executives are making one more last-ditch effort to save the stock from getting delisted (HMNY)
MoviePass parent Helios and Matheson on Friday said it would seek — again — to get shareholder authorization to reverse split its stock.
The company is in imminent danger of having its stock delisted from the Nasdaq; the market is hearing the company's appeal of its delisting decision later this month.
The proposal is basically the same one that the company withdrew in November in the face of widespread investor opposition.
Just as with that plan, the new proposal would give the comp -

Netflix says its new price hike won't kill growth, but data suggest $15 per month could be a much bigger problem (NFLX)
Netflix rolled out its biggest price hike ever this week, raising its most popular US plan from $11 to $13 per month.
Wall Street is bullish that the streaming service will be able to effectively manage the price increase, and Netflix's projections for first-quarter subscriber growth suggest it won't have a huge negative effect.
New survey data suggest, however, that Netflix might start to run into trouble at $15 per month. In general, customers begin threatening to cancel a service because of in
