DOW FLIRTS WITH 20,000: Here's what you need to know

What's going on in China right now reminds us of a great Princess Leia quote from Star Wars
In the beginning of "Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope," rebel leader Princess Leia (RIP the great Carrie Fisher) was captured by the evil Empire. The rebels had managed to steal the plans for the Empire's secret weapon, the Death Star, and so the Empire's agents were ruthlessly hunting for them all over the galaxy.
Leia told her captors that the planned Imperial crackdown on the rebels, using the Death Star to terrify planets into submission, wouldn't work.

KRUGMAN: The US is in 'deeper and more treacherous waters than even the pessimists are saying'
Paul Krugman is at a loss about the future of the Trump presidency, but he's not hopeful.
The Nobel-winning economist and New York Times columnist is concerned about possible connections between the president-elect and Russia.
"We are, I'd argue, in much deeper and more treacherous waters than even the pessimists are saying," Krugman tweeted Friday.
The election of Trump is tainted, Krugman said, because of the FBI's announcement weeks before Election Day regarding its reopened investigation int -
Here's which parts of Mexico's economy will get slammed if Trump puts his Twitter threats into action
President-elect Donald Trump has maintained his protectionist stance since the election, and recently threatened automotive manufacturers Toyota and GM on Twitter over plans to shift production to Mexico.
In light of that, it's worth examining which sectors in Mexico could get hit the hardest in the event Trump's proposed protectionist measures are implemented following his inauguration.
Neil Shearing, the chief emerging markets economist at Capital Economics, shared a chart in a -
DEUTSCHE BANK: Investors have given up on department stores (M, AEO, LB)
Count this as another bad sign for brick and mortar stores.
In a note to clients January 6, a group of Deutsche Bank analysts led by Paul Trussell wrote that investors view the entire department store sector as "unownable" due to the weakness among leading retailers.
That's right. Stock analysts, who are in the business of recommending stocks to investors, are basically saying that those investors think the entire sector is uninvestable. Ouch.

The 10 hottest housing markets for 2017
If you're looking to invest in real estate, look no further than Nashville.
The city is likely to be the hottest housing market in 2017, according Zillow, a real estate website, which offered its predictions for the 10 hottest housing markets of the year.
To come up with the ranking, Zillow looked for cities with "quickly rising home values, low unemployment rates and strong income growth."
Zillow expects housing values to appreciate 3% in 2017, and western cities a -

Neiman Marcus is pulling its IPO
The luxury retailer Neiman Marcus has requested to withdraw its initial public offering.
The company, which filed for its flotation in August 2015, said in a statement Friday it had "determined that it is not in its best interests to proceed with the initial public offering."
The private-equity firms TPG Capital and Warburg Pincus in 2013 sold Neiman Marcus to the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board and Ares Management.
The retailer in October 2015 said it would delay its offering until 2016 -

US oil rig count rises for 10th straight week
The US oil rig count increased by four to 529 this week, a one-year high, according to oilfield services company Baker Hughes.
The gas rig count increased by three to 135. With one miscellaneous rig remaining in use, the total count rose by seven to 665.

THE VERDICT: A comprehensive look back at Obama's jobs record
President Barack Obama took office in the throes of the worst recession since the Great Depression, as the future of the country's economy was in doubt and workers were being laid off like crazy.
Eight years later, it's clear that the Obama presidency has been pretty solid for the US labor market.
Despite a mixed Friday jobs report — the US economy added only 156,000 jobs against expectations of 175,000 — the labor market has come on strong over the past few years after the financial -

Samsung’s profits have recovered but has the brand?
Samsung expects to post a £6.2bn operating profit for the fourth quarter of last year, despite a series of faults including its Note 7 devices exploding.
2016 wasn’t the best of years for Samsung, as it was forced to end the production of its Note 7 phones after they caught fire, while a problem with its washing machines caused some to explode and soon led to another recall.

Pandora is falling after its most likely buyer dismissed acquisition rumors — and criticized its new direction (P, SIRI)
Internet radio pioneer Pandora tumbled more than 5% in trading on Friday after a Sirius XM exec threw cold water on rumors that the radio giant might acquire the company.
For months, Pandora has endured on-and-off rumors that it's trying to sell itself, and satellite radio powerhouse Sirius XM has been floated as the main suitor.
But, unfortunately for Pandora, Sirius XM doesn't appear to be interested.
"With respect to all the chatter about acquisitions, you have to look at them -
Treasurys are tumbling (TLT, TBT)
The US Treasury market is under pressure following the disappointing jobs report which showed the addition of 156,000 nonfarm jobs (175,000 expected) in December as the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.7%. The report did however have some good news in the form of average hourly earning, which hit a post-recession high of up 2.9% year-over-year.
Selling across the Treasury complex has yields higher for the first time in 2017, with the belly of the curve climbing by more than 8 bas -
The US has added more jobs than the other major advanced economies combined over the past 7 years
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its final US jobs report for 2016 on Friday.
US wages in December rose at their fastest pace since mid-2009, with average hourly earnings climbing by 2.9% year-over-year. The economy also added 156,000 jobs, fewer than expected but enough to extend the record streak of job creation in the US.
In conjunction with the BLS data, the Council of Economic Advisers released a report summarizing the eight years of labor-market progress under the Obama administrati -

A 29-year-old hedge fund manager reveals why he loves hiring liberal arts majors
Most people will tell you that you need to major in accounting, economics, or finance to land a job on Wall Street.
Daniel Rasmussen is the founder of Verdad Fund Advisors, and he's calling BS on needing a BS.
Rasmussen, who was recently named to Forbes' "30 Under 30" finance list, majored in history and literature at Harvard University. He is also the author of "American Uprising," a New York Times best-seller that chronicles a little-known slave rebellion in pre-Civil War Louisiana.

Wall Street's least bullish strategist says to buy 'CRAP' in 2017
Tom Lee, the founder of Fundstrat, says CRAP is the investing strategy for 2017.
"Buy CRAP — Computers, Resources, American banks and Phone carriers — all levered to investment recovery, inflation and deregulation," Lee wrote in his 2017 stock-market outlook published on Friday.
Lee, who had the highest year-end target for the S&P 500 among major strategists in 2016, has a 2017 target of 2,275. That's less than 2,300, the lowest target among 15 equity strategists at ma -
Lincoln is outperforming the luxury auto market (F)
The US auto market set a new sales record for 2016, beating 2015's record by about 50,000 vehicles. SUVs and pickups were hot sellers, but the luxury market overall was relatively flat, up only about 1% for the year.
Lincoln, Ford's luxury brand, was an exception. Sales were up 10%, with over 112,000 vehicles sold in 2016, including a fairly strong debut for the new full-size Continental sedan in a market moving against traditional four-doors.
That's a ways behind Mercedes, the ye -
