A resolution for the establishment in 2017: No more no-choice politics
This year, we learned the limits of no-choice politics: Telling voters they have to do something they don't like, or else.
Establishment political parties have been playing a dangerous game — contriving situations in which the only acceptable choice happens to be one favored by elites, and hoping that voters will choose it under duress.
Voters have been revolting against no-choice politics by choosing the unthinkable: Brexit, fringe political parties, rejecting the Italian reform refe -

NEW UNICORNS: Meet the 14 startups that grew to be worth billions in 2016
In Silicon Valley, a "unicorn" is a company with a billion-dollar valuation. Its name implies how rare it should be to reach that status.
But as more money pours into startups — a prominent trend over the last few years — more startups are achieving "unicorn" status.
Unicorns hit a fever pitch in 2015, when 42 startups achieved billion-dollar valuations. Yet as the data shows, becoming a unicorn wasn't quite as easy in 2016.
For the purposes of this list, Business Insider asked Pitch -
Mexico's soaring gas prices have angered citizens — and the backlash has been fierce
On December 27, days after gasoline shortages closed gas stations and caused immense lines at others, the Mexican government announced that gasoline and diesel prices would go up by between 14% and 20% over the next year.
The price increases come as part of a planned liberalization of Mexico's energy market, which involves the move from subsidies that kept gas prices low to a market-based pricing scheme that will adjust prices at the pump more frequently.
The public backlash to these price incr -
'Within expectations:' Apple will cut iPhone production to start 2017 (AAPL)
Apple will trim production of iPhones by about 10% in the January-March quarter, Nikkei reported, citing calculations based on data from suppliers.
The company slashed output by 30% in the January-March quarter in 2016 because of accumulated inventory, Nikkei reported.
Apple sold fewer iPhones in its fiscal 2016 than it had in the previous year for the first time since the iPhone was introduced.
'Within expectations'
A source at a parts supplier told Nikkei that the cut was "within expectations, -
US oil rig count rises for 9th straight week to the highest level in a year
The US oil rig count increased by two to 525 in the final week of 2016, rising to the highest level in a year, according to oilfield-services company Baker Hughes.
The gas rig count increased by three to 132. With one miscellaneous rig remaining in use, the total count rose by five to 658.
In 2016, the oil rig count staged a comeback not seen since the most recent oil crash. This week's increase put it just 11 rigs short of where it started the year, but well off pre-crash levels.

Wall Street has come to a consensus about China in 2017 — here's why it's likely very wrong
A recent report from China Beige Book, a survey of the country's economy, is challenging Wall Street's prevailing notion about China in 2017.
It all hinges on one word: stability.
The expectation on Wall Street is that since the Chinese Communist Party will be holding its 19th National Congress — a process in which the party chooses its top leadership positions — in 2017, President Xi Jinping will want to keep the economy stable so there's no distraction from his relentless -
Tesla stock might close down for the year — and that could be a good thing (TSLA)
The Wall Street Journal's Steven Russolillo tweeted on Thursday that Tesla shares are down at the end of year for the first time since the carmaker's 2010 IPO.
It's an accurate observation, although one that should be taken with a rather large grain of salt. After all, in 2013, the stock finished the year up over 300%.
Tesla is indeed down just over 10% in 2016, after sliding more than that at some point, but shares are also trading above $200, an important level if Tesla is to vindicate i -
