Tips for a successful telephone interview
A telephone interview may seem more informal than a face-to-face one, but because the interviewer can't see you or your facial expressions or your body language it's even more crucial that you get your tone of voice and delivery right. So here are some tips to help it go as smoothly as possible./>
The Basics
1.Prepare as you would for a face-to-face interview: research the company and industry; know your CV inside out; think through answers to typical interview questions.
2.Prepare a 30-seco -
What’s the value of being an early sponsor of emerging sports?
The summer of sport is well and truly underway, with the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament kicking off in France last week and Wimbledon and the Rio Olympics both firmly on the horizon. But amid a period of unprecedented sporting scandal and the emergence of new broadcast platforms and fan communities, it is certainly not business as usual for the average sports marketer.
Football, tennis and athletics have faced allegations of corruption and doping over the past year, with investigations -
Keith Weed: Securing brand legacy means tackling social issues and ad fraud
Brands. Love them or hate them, they are an integral part of our lives. I challenge anyone to go into a supermarket and get out in less than 10 minutes with what they need without brands to help guide them through. At the same time, we all know that the world is changing faster than ever. It is a naive brand manager – or CMO – who isn’t considering what the brands we build might look like in the artificial intelligence-enabled, virtual reality-enhanced, social media super-charg -
‘Marketers must work more closely with procurement’
The claims featured in a report by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) in the US last week, which found that the practice of media owners awarding rebates to advertising agencies based on the amount they spend is now “pervasive”.
The findings suggest agencies are not acting in their clients’ best interests when buying media, and follow similar concerns raised by UK trade body ISBA last month. However, major advertising groups such as Publicis and WPP have questioned -
How Heineken is revising its sponsorship strategy with F1 deal
The Formula One (F1) partnership, which comes into effect in 2017, will include campaigns based around Heineken’s global ‘Open your World’ and ‘If You Drive, Never Drink’ initiatives. Activations will include F1 circuit branding, TV ads, digital and social activity, live fan experiences and events, and point-of-sale activations. David Coulthard and Sir Jackie Stewart will be ambassadors for the respective campaigns.
The aim of the partnership is to grow Heineke -
Does Cannes still matters to marketers?
There are a lot of clichés that surround Cannes, mostly revolving around terrace parties and bottles of rose wine. What started off as a celebration of creativity has, for many, simply turned into a giant party that shows off the worst excesses of the ad industry.
Yet dig below the surface and there is still a lot for marketers to learn from Cannes. Creativity is still the most important part of advertising – even if it might go by a different guise now. Previously it might have bee -

Why transparency in data is key to building trust
When former ITV marketer Julia Porter joined Guardian news and Media in 2012 the brand was beset with difficulties. Revenue streams from its print circulation were in decline and it faced problems in monetising the digital audience, which was compounded by Facebook and Google’s dominance over the UK’s digital advertising market.
In order to survive the newspaper needed to make its existing audience more profitable and engage with them in a personalised and relevant way – data w -

Marketers feel ‘left in the dark and unprepared’ for a potential Brexit
Almost two-thirds of marketing professionals (62%) feel they don’t know enough about how the EU Referendum result could impact the business they work for, according to research by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).
It also found a wider lack of preparation on the part of UK companies, with 45% of the marketers surveyed saying they feel the business they work for doesn’t know enough about the consequences of the referendum result.

The context for commercial success is set by PR
Dominic ShalesManaging director
I believe that ‘PR’ should take the strategic lead in marketing or communication campaigns. I also believe that the most senior communications role (whether it be called head of communications, PR director, corporate affairs director, etc) should also oversee the marketing function.
I am aware this is contentious territory, particularly in Marketing Week, as it would mean turning the primacy of the broad marketing industry on its he -
B2B communications is evolving – PR and marketing need to keep up
Nick Clark
Managing director
In a world fixated on changing consumer behaviour, there’s been an enduring assumption that how brands sell to business audiences has not and will not change. Wrong. From the influx of social media usage, the rise of the visual web and a truly mobile first approach to just about everything, consumer trends are influencing the B2B buying process like never before.
So do we really know who today’s new B2B buyers are, and how best to attract their -

Established in 1749 as a who’s who of ruling class, Debrett’s now bills itself as the “trusted source on British social skills, etiquette and style”. From its offices in London’s Mayfair, the firm also offers a range of networking, training and mentoring opportunities to people who, presumably for the most part, aren’t short of such opportunities.

It is always a bit disconcerting when someone tells you they are not on Facebook. What are they hiding? And why do they not want to see my latest holiday snaps from Greece?
Many of these people do not have any social media accounts – not even a rogue Hi5 (remember that, anyone?). It is not that they have not been enlightened to the joys of a detailed Facebook stalk – more often they do not want their private lives paraded around in front of a load -
UKTV uses Facebook Messenger chatbot as it launches first campaign for ‘disruptive’ on-demand TV brand
The broadcaster’s ‘Love Your Thing’ campaign recognises the passion that exists around particular TV programming such as comedy, crime or period drama, and dubs this people’s ‘thing’. Whatever a viewer’s ‘thing’ is, the campaign for UKTV Play aims to celebrate it and reject “the homogenised on-demand TV world”.
UKTV Play is the company’s fastest growing brand and has hit a million downloads, which is why the campaign seeks t -
