Data: Retail sheds 360,000 jobs in a decade
The retail industry has lost more than 360,000 jobs over the past decade, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), sparking fresh concern over the sector’s long-term employment prospects.
The latest report reveals that there were 2.76 million retail jobs in March 2025. When adjusted for seasonal variation using a four-quarter average, the total stands at 2.8 million — down 93,000 compared to the same period last year, and 364,000 fewer than in 2015.

Retail sales growth slows as shoppers rein in non-essential spending
Retail sales rose just 1% year-on-year in May, marking the slowest growth recorded so far in 2025 as shoppers tightened their grip on non-essential spending.
