A coup for Hillary: Michelle Obama, Cory Booker and the big reset
A landmark moment in a landmark year, the Democrats face a tall rhetorical task this week. They seek to piece together a party that has cleaved – one faction toward movement-driven populism and the other rooted in centrist incrementalism – to answer the call of one of the most pivotal elections in a generation. The Democrats sought to emphatically trounce a Republican nominee who reflects the worst of a new, inward-facing nationalistic sensibility. Despite an extraordinarily and unus -
Digital advertising will determine the race to the White House
The 2016 presidential race is one of the most polarizing in recent history. Candidates will need to work extra hard to woo independent voters, who now make up 43 percent of the electorate. One of the best ways to move the needle is to double down on digital video, specifically mobile video.
Why this new modality? The answer lies in the fact that millennials, many of them independent voters, now make up America’s largest voting block. Additionally, we know this group spends more time on mob -
The value of public affairs professionals | Letters
I was disappointed to read Simon Jenkins’ article (Theresa May’s first test is to stand up to lobbyists, 21 July), in which he takes a number of issues he disagrees with and lays the blame for retaining Trident and delivering HS2, Heathrow and Hinkley Point on the influence of public affairs practitioners. Mr Jenkins should be well aware that there are public affairs professionals on both sides of all these arguments, so perhaps he may only dislike some of them.It is important to rec -
McDonald’s on Pokémon Go: ‘We are enjoying what it is doing for our business’
McDonald’s has credited its tie-up with Pokemon Go for boosting sales in Japan and says it forms part of its strategy to “talk to leadership partners”.
McDonald’s was the first brand to advertise on Pokémon Go, paying to see 3,000 of its fast-food restaurants in Japan become ‘Pokémon gyms’ in the virtual reality game. Players must visit these locations to progress in the game by becoming the gym’s champion.

How marketers can use data to deliver on-brand promises in a targeted way
Highly targeted and personalised ads may not translate to higher profits, according to research published earlier this year by professor Pedro Gardete at Stanford Graduate School and Yakov Bart, a professor at Northeastern University, Massachusetts. In some cases, they claim, the most effective strategy is for consumers to keep information private and for businesses to track less of it – which is the opposite of current thinking.
The pair used game theory to build a mathematical model enab -
Twitch partners with Netflix, releases streaming survey
Twitch, a social video platform and community created for games, has partnered with Netflix to activate around the release of the supernatural thriller, “Stranger Things.” With a four hour live broadcast hosted on Twitch on July 14, which ended with eight minutes of the first episode, the collaboration resulted in “Twitch Plays Haunted Basement.”
“As our team of Influencers played various games ... in our 80's-themed basement set, Twitch chat voted on creepy things -
Marketers continue to ‘waste money’ as only 9% of digital ads are viewed for more than a second
The vast majority of digital advertising is not being viewed at all, with many marketers still failing to apply effectiveness techniques learned from print and out-of-home to the channel, according to a new study.
Since January 2016, research firm Lumen has used laptop-mounted eye tracking cameras on 300 consumers’ laptops to collect visual data on what they notice when they are online. And over this period the study, which was run in partnership with Nectar-owner Aimia, recorded 30,000 mi -

Everything you need to know about content marketing
With content marketing, knowing and targeting your audience is critical. Content marketers must ensure their communications are useful, informative or entertaining to readers and viewers – otherwise they won’t be read, or watched.
Today, the role of data to discern a brand’s audience(s) and a wealth of digital channels are helping marketers realise the power of content – little wonder budgets are growing at an estimated 25 per cent a year, according to the Content Marketi -
Email is slowly dying. No, really it is
A story about cake and internal agency communication. Technology is easy, changing behaviour is much harder.
I reached a personal milestone last week. The moment passed without any great celebration but it was important nonetheless.
London was stunning in the heat of July as I travelled back and forth across the city on foot, by bike and riverboat. My Thursday consisted of a mix of client meetings, mentoring, writing and a couple of social catch-ups.
I spent about half my time at my desk, the ot -
Sir Philip Green’s reputation might be in tatters but his Arcadia brands will continue to prosper
Sir Philip Green is on the defensive after a damning investigation by MPs into his sale of BHS and its subsequent demise dubbed him the “unacceptable face of capitalism". While the damage done to his reputation is not likely to fade fast, the impact it has on the Arcadia Group brands – such as Topshop and Miss Selfridge – will be minimal (if anything at all).
The billionaire’s public dressing down came on Monday (25 July) after MPs on the work and pensions -

Putting the cart before the horse: Why betting against customer experience could cost you your job
Last week, William Hill made an announcement that, after 31 years with the company, and two years as chief executive, it had ‘ousted’ James Henderson. The reason? Because he failed to capitalise on a growing online betting market.
A slightly sweeping statement I admit, especially when William Hill has announced it’s experimenting with VR to reinvigorate sports betting and aims to develop ‘ten new innovations a year’. This certainly seems like a strategy focused on u -

Social Buzz Show: Cass Gowing of AllSaints talks micro-influencers
What is a micro-influencer, and where did the term come from? Cass Gowing of AllSaints is the latest guest on The Drum's Social Buzz sofa as she sits down to discuss these questions.
Touching on the way the retailer counts on consumers with small social followings to help spread AllSaints' marketing message to family and friends, Gowing said: "I think that we've definitely reached a saturation point with influencers. People definitely aren't stupid, they know that posts are -

Legal Sea Foods faces backlash over 'sexist' ad calling Hillary Clinton a 'cold fish'
Restaurant chain Legal Sea Foods has come under fire for a "sexist" print ad it ran in the Boston Globe calling Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton a ‘cold fish’.
The New England-based company stumped up for a full page campaign running under the slogan #FeelTheBerk in reference to Bernie Sander’s political mantra and playing on the name of its chief executive Roger Berkowitz, but was soon called out on Twitter for its seemingly misogynistic implications.

Tesco cans John West tuna lines in sustainability row as brand cull continues
Tesco has removed select John West tuna products from its shelves, claiming the move is a result of the company failing to reach its sustainability targets.
However, it also comes amidst a massive consolidation drive by Tesco to try and reduce the number of branded lines on its shelves. Last year, added-sugar drinks aimed at children (such as Ribena and Capri-Sun) fell victim to the brand cull.
The supermarket said that “decided to delist a number of core John West lines” last -
Mark Ritson: The real lesson of Pokémon Go is that today’s marketers will jump on any bandwagon
I tried to resist as long as humanly possible. But the gravitational pull of Pokémon Go has pulled me into its digital tractor beam and forced me to join the throng of marketers enthralled by every facet of its augmented reality.
Like millions of other marketers, I now openly acknowledge that there have been two eras in the history of marketing – BPG and APG. All the old rules about having a strategy, doing research and thinking about stuff are clearly redundant because they were i -

Pornhub penetrated by hackers: Pays a bounty to protect your dirty data
A hacking group has gained access to leading porn website Pornhub, highlighting an exploitation that can be made via the the site's PHP coding.

In return, the group relinquished control of the site, choosing not to leak any data on users and their viewing habits, news which would be a relief to many no doubt (see Ashley Madison leak).

Brexit-effect not felt by supermarkets (yet) but growth remains sluggish
British supermarkets have not felt the impact of the EU referendum result, but the sector is continuing to experience slow growth with sales overall up just one per cent on last year. Instead, it was England’s poor performance in the Euros (and sub-par summer weather) which has been causing grocery bosses the biggest headaches this quarter.
It’s the first grocery share figures to be released by Kantar Worldpanel since the decision to Leave the EU was made. The research firm said that -

Archant is preparing its fourth and maybe final issue of the New European this week, with executives deciding today (26 July) if the paper will extend its initial four-week run.
The first issue sold over 40,000 copies at a premium price point of £2, which some media experts suggested would be the paper’s downfall. Interestingly, Archant did not spend big on market research, advertising, staffing or agency recruitment, and put a £10,000 cap on marketing.
