Government has run out of ideas to tackle cost of living crisis, says UNISON
Responding to the government’s agenda as set out in the Queen’s Speech today (Tuesday), UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:
“This is a government that’s run out of ideas. Thirty-eight laws proposed but there are no answers to the biggest cost of living crisis in recent times.
“Ministers haven’t grasped the seriousness of the situation. Families are being forced into debt and are going hungry.
“Nothing announced today will make a shr

Sandwell leisure workers strike to open new pay battle
UNISON members in the West Midlands are taking strike action today in support of a 10% pay claim or a return to national local government NJC pay.
Joined by members of GMB and Unite, this new dispute follows the fire and rehire of all 280 staff at Sandwell Leisure Trust to remove them from national pay terms in March 2021.

Doing the right thing doesn’t have to be angst-ridden. You can argue for a change in how the government copes with the cost of living crisis and have some fun with your friends and family.

Blog: Why attacks on legal abortion are a trade union matter
On 2 October last year, UNISON was proud to stand in solidarity with the thousands who marched in cities across the UK, and in other parts, of the world to protest against new limits on abortions in Texas.
Now it seems the US supreme court has voted to overturn Roe v Wade – a momentous ruling that will result in abortion becoming immediately illegal in an estimated 26 states when it is officially issued.
This latest development is one of many attacks by governments on a woman’s

Blog: No surprise at a Queen’s Speech that delivered nothing
In last week’s local elections, the Tories took a hammering at the ballot box. Losing nearly 500 council seats is anything but a ringing endorsement of the party in power, and losing flagship councils in the capital is a bad look for a former London mayor.
At UNISON, it was just as we expected, because we know our members’ biggest concern – just like many voters across the UK – is the cost of living crisis.
