Willis Towers Watson has named Mark Quinn as head of its
specialist satellite insurance business Inspace with immediate
effect.
Quinn succeeds Roger Bathurst, who will leave the broker after
more than six years as head of the business. Quinn will be based in
Washington DC.
With more than 20 years' experience in the space insurance
industry, Quinn has played a major role in the development of
Inspace since joining the firm in the early 1990s, the company
said.

UK Supreme Court overturns London riots judgement
Insurers will face paying business interruption losses from the
destruction of a Sony warehouse during the London riots of August
2011, after the UK Supreme Court overturned a previous ruling by
the Court of Appeal.
Five Supreme Court judges considered whether insurers can
recover consequential losses under the Riot (Damages) Act 1886, a
Victorian-era law that makes the police liable for riot-related
damage on the grounds that it is their responsibility to prevent
disorder.

Record $2bn ILS issuance in Q1: WCMA
The first quarter of 2016 saw a record $2bn of non-life
catastrophe bond issuance, according to Willis Capital Markets
& Advisory (WCMA).
The Q1 total is 35 percent higher than in the same period last
year, but it is too early to say whether this will translate to a
record-breaking year, WCMA said in its latest ILS Market
Update.

QIC grows top line by 41% in Q1
Qatar Insurance Company (QIC) expanded its top line by 41
percent in the first quarter to $741mn, driven largely by premium
growth at its reinsurance arm Qatar Re.
Qatar Re disclosed reinsurance premiums of $307mn, accounting
for more than 41 percent of the group's total premium income,
QIC said, adding that the company had also seen growth in its life
and medical operations.
Net earned premiums in the quarter grew 67 percent to
$468mn.

Macroeconomic issues affecting claims activity
Challenging macroeconomic conditions are causing a bump in
claims activity as insurers experience substantial problems with
increased fraud and product liability issues, according to law firm
BLM.
Delegates at BLM's casualty roundtable today (20 April) said
the poor economy presented an "ideal opportunity" for
fraudsters.
Liability claims fraud tripled between 2010 and 2014 to reach a
total of £343mn ($493.7mn) from 19,283 claims.

Irdai to make decision on foreign reinsurers
The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority of India (Irdai)
will decide within four months whether to licence four reinsurance
entities to start operations in the country, according to local
news outlet First Post.
The applications filed by Swiss Re, Lloyd's, Munich Re and
Hannover Re will be processed at the next Irdai board meeting,
chairman TS Vijayan told reporters on the sidelines of Irdai's
"Formation Day" celebrations.

The China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) has drafted rules
permitting insurance companies to list on an over-the-counter
equity market.
The National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ) platform,
