The violent tornadoes in the US and a deluge of floods on both
sides of the Atlantic in December contributed to an insurance bill
in the region of $4bn, according to Aon Benfield's Impact
Forecasting unit.
The cat model development team reported that preliminary
estimates suggest economic losses from the US weather events will
exceed $4bn, with insured losses likely to approach or exceed
$2bn.

James and Maidment beat Aubert to Lloyd's Council seats
Allied World president Julian James and Beazley chief
underwriting officer Neil Maidment have been elected to the Council
of Lloyd's for three-year terms beginning in February.
Both candidates beat Willis GB CEO Nicolas Aubert, who also
stood for election for the two working member vacancies,
Lloyd's announced today (6 January).
Maidment polled 323 votes, with 207 for James against 168 for
Aubert.

Ryan Direct to buy Midas Underwriting
Ryan Specialty UK subsidiary Ryan Direct Group (RDG) has entered
into an agreement to buy Northern Ireland-based managing general
agency (MGA) Midas Underwriting for an undisclosed amount.
Paul Donaldson, currently non-executive director at RDG, will
chair the acquired business, which also has an additional office in
Chelmsford, Essex. The deal is expected to close in the first
quarter of this year.

PIB, the UK start-up broker consolidator formed by ex Willis UK
& Ireland CEO Brendan McManus, announced today (6 January) that
Ryan Brown had been hired as its group CFO.
Brown was most recently finance director of Towergate
Underwriting, but was best known in the market for his role leading
Towergate's acquisition strategy as group M&A director.
Towergate disbanded the M&A team in April last year in the
wake of its restructure and refinancing.

Canopius, the international specialty arm of Japanese insurer
Sompo, has further expanded its New York-based US direct and
facultative (D&F) business with the appointment of Ivan Breen,
sister title Inside FAC revealed
yesterday (5 January).
Sources said Breen has been hired as a senior vice president in
the US direct property team and is reporting to Bradley Winfield,
head of US direct property for Canopius, who launched the start-up
D&F unit in January 2015.

2015, showing no growth for the first time in several years,
