A Standard & Poor's (S&P) downgrade of Japan's
sovereign rating from AA- to A+ has resulted in lowered
counterparty credit ratings for a swathe of Japanese insurance
companies, including some of their subsidiaries.

New threats mean cyber insurers need specialist partners
The cyber insurance market must collaborate with bodies outside of
insurance to better prepare for the evolving nature of the risk,
according to Lloyd's emerging risks manager Nick Beecroft.
Speaking at a cyber insurance roundtable organised by cyber
security firm Kaspersky today (17 September), Beecroft and other
industry participants explained how cyber exposures are fast
developing beyond data breaches.

Fairfax backs EUR70mn FBD capital raise
Canadian conglomerate Fairfax Financial has agreed to invest in a
EUR70mn convertible bond issue from troubled Irish insurer FBD,
subject to FBD shareholder approval.
The bond is a 10-year Solvency II-compliant instrument with a 7
percent coupon paid annually.
Fairfax will have the right to convert the bond into equity from
year three. The conversion price has been set a EUR8.50 - a 37
percent premium over FBD's closing price on the Dublin market
on 15 September.

US state-funded rail operator Amtrak is seeking to raise $200mn
from PennUnion Re in what will be only the second cat bond to cover
storm surge, sister publication Trading
Risk reported earlier today (17 September).

Tsunamis hit after magnitude 8.3 quake strikes Chile
A magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck just off the coast of central
Chile on Wednesday evening (16 September), triggering a series of
tsunami waves that hit Chile and elsewhere in the Pacific.
It was the strongest earthquake anywhere in the world this year,

Risk profile of global hull market improving: IUMI
The risk profile of the shipping and marine insurance industry is
improving, according to the International Union of Marine Insurance
(IUMI).

Janice Deakin has been appointed chief executive of Towergate's
insurance broking arm as part of a reshuffle of the division's
